23 Oct

16-10-09 is Pre Day

24 Sep

So finally it’s official, the 16th of October is the day UK residents get hold of the Palm Pre. The device, which is exclusive to O2 will be available free on 18 month contracts starting at £45 a month, or 24 month contracts from £35 a month. You will be able to get the phone from either O2 stores direct, Carphone Warehouse or Phones4U as well as O2 online.

I’ll be there in line (if there is one) will you?

Thanks to Dave M for the snappy heads-up on this breaking news item.

Second Palm device comes to light

01 May

To backup predictions featured in my previous post, Engadget Mobile have worked their magic again and come-up with some sources that have given up some pictures and specs on the Palm “EOS”

Engadget Mobile state:

We just got the full spec list. And yes, it’s definitely coming to AT&T (if it’s really coming).

  • 4GB storage
  • Price: $349 (pre-rebate)
  • Camera: 2 megapixel fixed focus digital camera and flash / video capture
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1 w/ A2DP and EDR, USB 2.0 via micro USB
  • Removable 1150 mAh battery (4 hours 3G talk time)
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS (picture and video only), integrated IM client
  • Contact sync with AT&T Address Book
  • MediaNet
  • Cellular Video
  • Email: POP3, IMAP4, and EAS support
  • A-GPS
  • Audio: WAV, MP3, AAC, AAC+ ringtones
  • Video Playback: MPEG4, H.264, H.263

So a second device seems ever more likely now, not sure how this will pan out with the Pre, I fear it may drop sales in the device while people wait to get reviews of it and then buy then second gen one, however the specs seem different enough to maybe not cause that.

We’ll see

Palm Pre Developments….

30 Apr

So since Palm announced the Pre huge amount of rumors have been floating around the Internet about things such as carriers, release dates etc etc. I thought I would round up some of the more recent and interesting developments.

Firstly we have the release date:

  • Precentral.net managed to get hold of a leaked Sprint document detailing some information about the Pre (amongst other devices) and labels the release date as the 7th of June. To compound this rumor Palm made a casting call for a “viral video” which is scheduled to be filmed from the 29th of April to the 5th of June. Precentral says the part is for a guy being upset that the Pre hasn’t been released yet. It’s going to be a “protest”, and the guy won’t leave his apartment until it’s released.
  • We also know that Palms main competitor is Apple and the iPhone and the 7th of June is the likely to be the day before the World Wide Developer Conference at which Apple is doing a Keynote!

Next on the list is the number of devices available:

  • Bloomberg.com reports that Palm may cap the number of devices made this year to 400,000 in a attempt to make it seem more alluring to customers. This will also relate to the cost of the device which Palm in my opinion needs to be very careful about. They cannot afford to set it too high, the 8GB iPhone sells for $199 and for me that means the Pre needs to be under that by at least $40. Palm has had troubles recently and has been left by the wayside in the rankings, they need to get a good device out there to a mass market to prove they can beat the competition then bring in higher cost devices later down the line.

Lastly we have another Pre:

Mike Arrington of Techcrunch wrote today that:

One of our better sources indicated to us that Palm is “very far along” on a second Pre-like device and currently has plans to put it on the market in the late part of 2009, possibly as early as the Fall.

If this is true then maybe Palm will put the device price a bit lower and limit the number handsets available, this would leave room then for a more expensive device later on this year once public approval of the Pre comes through (assuming it does).

I think you’ll agree there are some interesting and some strange rumors floating around at the moment. I wait with baited breath to see what’s next!

MWC day one and two cont….

17 Feb

Nokia’s E75 made a debut today as well, I don’t think it’s a pretty handset certainly not like the E71 anyway.

it’s the first Eseries device to support N-Gage gaming and you get a flavour of how progressive and exciting this pipsqueak pocket communicator truly is – it barely stretches that tape measure to 111.8mm x 50mm x 14.4mm, with a QVGA screen that measures in at 2.4-inches.

Squeezed into this compact shell are all the hallmarks of a leading Eseries device. The Nokia E75 comes loaded with the new Nokia Messaging service for slick email HTML email support. Plus it’s packing a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, high speed HSDPA access, integrated A-GPS with Nokia Maps, and a music player with a 3.5mm standard audio connector.
Nokia.com

Next is the Samsung S8300 a 12.7mm thick handset that packs a punch. GPS, FM Radio, stereo Bluetooth and Micro SD (upto 16gb) as well as an 8mp camera means that this rather compact device is sure to be a hit with the masses. (This device was actually announced before MWC but was shown off there today.

The award of the most bonkers name goes to Sony Ericsson for the Idou, however it is a temporary name, before release it will be changed to something a bit more palatable. It has a 12.1MP camera, yes 12.1 as well as a 3.5 inch touch screen. Not much else in terms of details as the phone is quite a way off production release (some say it’ll be 2010 before it gets to market)

Lastly for now, Palm and Nokia have both joined the Open Screen Project to enable adobe flash 10 on their devices (pre and most nokia’s). The flash app is due at the end of the year so it is a way off reality yet but bodes well for devices queueing up to use it.

Well that’s more than enough information overload for tonight, more tomorrow. Night all

Palm – New OS to be Unveiled at CES??

17 Dec

So Palm Nova is the new OS that has been talked about now for what seems like a life time, after months of delays and supposed revamps Palm seem to be set to show it off at the upcoming CES event. This surely now has to be the last chance for Palm to turn it’s fortunes around and start winning what was once a loyal contingency of fans back. Recently those die hard fans have been leaving in droves for other options such as the iPhone, G1 and even Win Mobile devices. As a past fan of the Palm OS and a current fan of their hardware (the Treo 750v was still the best phone (in terms of design) I have ever had) I really want palm to succeed with this OS.

The According to Businessweek, Palm want the os to fill the void between the suit-loving business focus of RIM’s BlackBerry handsets and the eye-candy multimedia feast of the iPhone.

In other news Douglas Jeffries, has just been appointed CFO at the company, Jeffries resigned as CFO of corn-based fuel maker Pacific Ethanol Inc in July of 2007 after only six weeks in the position. Prior to that he was chief accounting officer at eBay Inc.

PalmGear have just announced their new Palm App Store as well, everyone seems to be jumping on that old bandwagon and to be honest palms is nothing special!!!

We wait to see what Palm has in store!
