26 Aug

It has taken me a while to compose this post, it is an issue I was discussing a few days ago and to formulate my opinion took a lot of deliberating. I did not want jump in at the heat of the moment with a gut feeling, with such a subject I felt considerable thought was needed.
The date in the title refers to the subject I am going to discuss. The release of Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi the man convicted in 2001 of the Lockerbie bombing.

To start I wish to define a couple of elements surrounding the UK law in reference to life sentences.

A definition of a life sentence is:

Life imprisonment or life incarceration is a sentence of imprisonment for a serious crime, often for most or even all of the criminal’s remaining life, but in fact for a period which varies between jurisdictions: many countries have a maximum possible period of time The average sentence in the United Kingdom is about 15 years before the first parole hearing, although those convicted of exceptionally grave crimes remain behind bars for considerably longer.

Wikipedia

As the definition of of a life sentence says “often for most or even all of the criminal’s remaining life” however some countries do offer early paroles. Megrahi was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a recommendation that he should serve at least 20 years before being eligible for parole. However after only 8 years he has been released on compassionate grounds. He has been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer and given 3 months to live. For this reason Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny McAskill offered Megrahi early parole.

So let me get this straight, this man was convicted of taking 270 lives in cold pre meditate murder, he was put in jail on a life sentence with a recommendation of serving at least 20 years before parole was available and after only 8 years he gets let out. Ok he has cancer but that is not a reason, in my opinion, to let him out. He murdered these people, he stopped them from from ever seeing or being seen by their families again. He took people in the prime of their lives and erased them with no qualms at all. He at no point has shown remorse for what he has done, this was emphasised by Mr McAskill in a statement he made.

“Mr al-Megrahi did not show his victims any comfort or compassion. They were not allowed to return to the bosom of their families to see out their lives, let alone their dying days. No compassion was shown by him to them,” he said.

“But that alone is not a reason for us to deny compassion to him and his family in his final days.”

BBC

Why not???? If he shows no remorse for what he did then why should we let him return to his family to die, none of his victims were given the opportunity to do such a thing.

For me this decision is a big mistake by the Scottish Government and one that will be talked about for a long time.

I know I do not usually do personal or political posts but I felt compelled to write this one.

Shuttle launch scrubbed

25 Aug

153212main_rain_1_425 Cloud cover and thunderstorms caused NASA to scrub today’s launch attempt of the shuttle. Currently they are going through the recycle phase and have reset the countdown clock. The next attempt will be tomorrow at 1.10edt (6.10bst).

There is a 30% chance that the weather will stop that attempt which is slightly higher than today, let’s cross our fingers they can get away.

All systems go….

24 Aug

STS-128 looks set to launch tomorrow at 6.36am bst. The weather is reporting at the moment as an 80% chance of favorable conditions.

Remember you can watch the launch live @ www.nasa.gov/ntv

For the best quality feed choose “Other Viewing Options” from the right hand sidebar and then choose “Windows Media” which is the second choice in the list.

Total launch from blast off to orbit usually takes about 10 mins.

Enjoy!

Capacitive screen with stylus… Tell me more

20 Aug

Capacitive screens are deemed as the best solution for touch screen devices (most of the time anyway), but one problem with them is that a stylus cannot be used. This means that our fat little digits have to do all the work when using the device, and if they are anything like mine, accuracy is an issue (one that I have never been able to solve).  However when everyone else is sending the idea of a stylus to davey jone’s locker, HTC are going against the flow and trying to bring it back.

magneticstylus_thumb

They have been issued a patent for a stylus with a magnetically charged tip that will work on a capacitive screen. The best thing about this is, that it will apparently work with a totally unmodified capacitive screen, unlike some devices such as the wacom tablets that use a modified screen and stylus.

The patent was applied for last December and awarded on the 16th, for me it will be a welcomed addition to capacitive screen devices.

An update on space

18 Aug

Not the whole of space, that would take ages but I’ll update you on NASA’s goings on as I haven’t mentioned the space programme in quite a while.

The last mission saw STS-127 blast off on the 15th of July at 6.03pm EDT and delivered the Kibo module to the ISS.

Endeavour set sail on its 23rd mission with the Kibo Japanese Experiment Module Exposed Facility and Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section. The facility provides a type of “front porch” for experiments in the exposed environment, and a robotic arm that is attached to the Kibo Pressurized Module and is used to position experiments outside the station. The mission included five spacewalks.
Nasa.gov

The mission was classed as a total success and was completed with the wheels down of the shuttle on July 31st. Due the delays in getting the shuttle launched (thanks to both weather and technical reasons) the next mission to the the space station was very much in preparation when STS-127 landed.

STS-128 is scheduled for a August 24th Launch at 1.24am EDT, this mission will see Discovery launch on it’s 36th flight since it’s commissioning in 1984 and will see it deliver supplies and a new occupant to the ISS.

Discovery’s flight will deliver supplies and equipment to the International Space Station. Inside
the shuttle’s cargo bay is the Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM), a pressurized
“moving van” that will be temporarily installed to the station. The module will deliver science
and storage racks, a freezer to store research samples, a new sleeping compartment and the
COLBERT treadmill. The 13-day mission will include three spacewalks to replace experiments
outside the European Space Agency’s Columbus laboratory, and install a new ammonia storage
tank and return the used one. Ammonia is used to move excess heat from inside the station
to the radiators located outside. Discovery also will deliver a new crew member and bring
back another after almost two months aboard the space station.
Nasa.gov

As this is a night launch, I will repeat what I have said a number of times before, if you can watch this one do… If you never watch another launch so be it, but night launches are something special to see. For the UK residents it’s not a bad time really with the launch at 6.24am BST.

There are also only a few shuttle missions left in the program now with the last targeted to launch on September 16th 2010. This will then lead the way for the Ares launch vehicles and the beginning of the Constellation program to return to the Moon and to go to Mars.

Nokia and Microsoft become friends and share office!

14 Aug

A couple of days ago the Microsoft Press department announced the following:

Today, Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop and Nokia’s Executive Vice President for Devices Kai Öistämö announced the agreement, outlining a shared vision for the future of mobile productivity. This is the first time that either company has embarked on an alliance of this scope and nature.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will begin collaborating immediately on the design, development and marketing of productivity solutions for the mobile professional, bringing Microsoft Office Mobile and Microsoft business communications, collaboration and device management software to Nokia’s Symbian devices.

This is definately a good thing for Nokia symbian devices, as an E71 user I have noticed that Documents to Go doesn’t quite cut the mustard for me, not as much as Office on my former Win Mo device did. Also this agreement presents the opportunity for futher collaboration and development of Nokia smartphones into the world of Microsoft, something that will give them a real shot at snatching business customers away from Blackberry.

FriendFeed gets inhaled by Facebook…. who wins?

11 Aug

So for me this was not a huge shock (someone was going to buy them sooner or later) but a possible detremental decision for the users of FriendFeed. For Facebook this is a big move and a good one to boot, they have identified the power of realtime search and bought the best company in that particular area. There is nothing close to FriendFeed’s tech for realtime updating or search at the moment. Facebook will definately be able to capitalise on this.

The larger issue that bugs me is what will happen to Friendfeed, in the short term the CEO’s of both companies say that nothing major will change, but that they are working on a roadmap for the future of both services. Paul Buchheit (co founder of FriendFeed) told Robert Scoble in an interview that he and Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, “are on the same wavelength”.

In essence Friendfeed is dead, the dev team will be much more effective on getting realtime search to work for the 300 million users Facebook has, the faster thay do that the better. It may happen a few years down the line from now but in reality Friendfeed will be assimilated like a new borg entity into the collective that is Facebook (sorry that was uber geeky).

Almalgamating the FriendFeed users into Facebook is a big issue that the team will need to overcome. I use FriendFeed for news and info, Facebook is for me about keeping in touch with contacts and friends. I like these two things being seperate and cannot see a seemless way to link them together.

To be honest Facebook gets and epic win on this deal, the guys at FriendFeed do too (they get jobs with Facebook and a load of cash) but the users of FriendFeed lose out big time.

What’s your thoughts

Chrome gets themeified

05 Aug

So this has been rumoured for the last few days after the latest development release of Chrome offered theme support, however as of today the theme directory has gone live.

Some of the themes I must admit are not my cup of tea, that said I do like a lot of them and to have the ability to theme things is certainly an added bonus for what is already a super browser.

The iGoogle themes took off pretty well and some amazing designs have come from people for that, I assume we can expect much of the same for Chrome themes.

All we now need is plugins and extensions to be added….

Yahoo and Microsoft, my view

03 Aug

3768403423_0b04797be1 I know this news is a lil old but what the heck. My overall view hasn’t changed from my initial thought when I heard about the deal. I was thinking as the dust settled it might seem a bit better but it really hasn’t.

Bottom Line: This deals backwards…

Microsoft has marketed Bing as a “Decision Engine” not a search engine. Also Microsoft search tech is not as good as Yahoo’s so surely taking the rights to Yahoo’s search tech and then trying to integrate it into Bing is much harder work than the other way round.
Yahoo will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies and use Microsoft’s AdCenter Platform to do it. Yahoo seemed pretty good at selling advertising and made a hefty chunk of cash from it, why change the processes and the costs (prices will be set by AdCenter’s automated auction)

Yahoo has made a super windfall out of this with the revenue sharing agreement for the ad’s they get 88% of the revenue from the ads generated on Yahoo’s sites for the first 5 years.

Yahoo! estimates, based on current levels of revenue and current operating expenses, that this agreement will provide a benefit to annual GAAP operating income of approximately $500 million and capital expenditure savings of approximately $200 million. Yahoo! also estimates that this agreement will provide a benefit to annual operating cash flow of approximately $275 million.

For me this is a very complicated and somewhat backward deal. Let Yahoo handle the search (they have a better history in it) and let MSFT do the advertising (The AdCenter Platform works pretty well).

A Tale of two hard drives

03 Aug

hard-drive-flames1 So on Friday night I had my 4th HD failure in as many years, this time it was the OS drive again so none of my data was affected.
For me this has become one of “those things” that I just deal with, having so many drives fail was part and parcel of my computing life. However when I took this drive out I realised it was the last of the cheap drives I had in my PC.
When I first building my PC I did so on a budget and refused to spend a huge amount. That included HD’s, looking back now I realise that was probably a stupid thing to do, my housemate who has only ever used Seagate and Weston Digital drives (at least I think that’s all he uses) has not had a failure in ages. My Grandmother has a good saying “you can’t afford to buy cheap” and in this case it seems she was right. All my drives now are Seagate and I have backup solutions galore… However having to rebuild my machine this weekend meant I could not post on Sunday as planned.
