3rd time lucky

21 May

Totally off the tech topic but warrants a post.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes last night completed a challenge that on his 1st attempt gave him a heart attack. He completed an attempt on the summit of Mount Everest around midnight last night UK time. Upon arriving at the summit he talked to the BBC and exclaimed that
“this is the closest you can get to the moon by walking”. Fiennes, 65 becomes the oldest Briton to scale the mountain and the 1st person to cross both of the earths poles and scale Everest.

He kept his 3rd charity based attempt fairly low key, he was climbing for Marie Curie Cancer Care after his wife, mother and sister were all taken by the disease within 18 months of each other.

In 2005 he attempted Everest for the first time but after having a heart attack he turned back. His second attempt in 2008 was ended after exhaustion took it’s toll on the adventurer. All these feats were taken after Fiennes had a triple heart bypass in 2003.

Well done Sir Fiennes a truly amazing feat.

June 6th is the day

20 May

I am a bit off the ball here with this one, primarily because work has assimilated my life at this current point. Anyway, yesterday the Palm marketing department sent out a mass email to all that had registered interest in a Pre. It read as follows:

Palm Pre device

The new Palm® Pre™ phone will be here June 6, starting at $199.99 on the Sprint network (after rebate and service agreement).1
People, events, information that matters. With Palm Pre, it´ll come to you.

Yes folks it’s coming and right in the middle of the two long predicted days. Still no word however on the UK/Europe GSM version, guess I’ll be waiting a little longer for my next phone!!

Small ongoing modifications

17 May

You may have noticed some small changes going on with my theme recently, for example the pen and eraser have gone to be replaced with better images (the old ones looked fake). Also the phone at the bottom has changed (this will change in line with the phone or phones I am using at the current moment), also I added a coffee cup to the left of the theme, after all I do love my coffee!! These are just some of the changes complete and there are still a few to come so if anything looks weird at any point just assume I am fiddling around.

This theme was released as a work in progress, the majority is finished I am just polishing it up a bit.

I hope you like it, if you want leave some comments to let me know what you like/dislike!

Soon I will have a review of the Nokia E71 to post.

Star Trek, my review

15 May

There is one spoiler in this review it is clearly marked and only lasts one line, this review is more an opinion on how the film captured the feel of Star Trek as opposed to the story line.

Firstly I’ll say that the film was an amazing watch, it’s action packed, emotional, fun and dramatic all in the correct proportions. I have a set of pro’s and con’s I derived from the film and an overall conclusion;

Pro’s

  • The relationship between the young Kirk, Spock and McCoy was captured brilliantly. The underlying humour that was so ever present in the series was well captured and each characters quirks and traits were portrayed very well.
  • The linkages into the series and through Kirks younger life was well maintained.

Con’s

  • The Bridge, the Enterprise in the series looked v different to the movie, I know it’s a hollywood movie but I feel the consistency could have been a bit closer there.
  • The Romulan separatists’ ship was far too futuristic for the time period it came from
    *SPOILER ALERT*
  • Spock and Uhura what is up with that!!!!!
    *SPOILER OVER*

Overall, I loved every minute of it, it was “engaging” (excuse the pun) the whole way though and captured the essence of Star Trek very well. J.J Abrahms should be v proud (I’m sure he is)

Atlantis grabs the Hubble spacewalk prep begins….

13 May

Hubble servicing (Nasa) Space shuttle Atlantis has reached the Hubble telescope, orbiting at a height of 560km (350 miles) over the Earth.

The shuttle crew completed a delicate dance of manoeuvres intended to align Atlantis’ robotic arm with the telescope during their approach.

The arm was used to get hold of Hubble and draw it into the shuttle’s bay.
BBC

The spacewalks (5 in total) will commence tomorrow with the 1st being a expedition to remove a wide field planetary camera (No. 2) and Install another one (No. 3) as well as replace the computer that relays science data to the ground as well as controls the instruments on the craft.

Earlier on today astronauts carried out an inspection of the Hubble using the camera on the end of Atlantis’s cargo arm (before it grabbed the telescope), mission specialist John Grunsfield stated "Hubble, an old man of 19 years. It still looks in fantastic shape.".

As always all the coverage can be seen live on NasaTV @ www.nasa.gov/ntv

Atlantis heads for a meeting with the Hubble

13 May

345507main_launch-m_800-600 Wednesday 7.41edt (12.41gmt) is the projected time Space Shuttle Atlantis will rendezvous with the Hubble telescope and all is on track for that meeting. Astronauts last night completed a survey of the shuttles heat shield and whilst 4 “dings” were found spanning 4 of the heat shield tiles, analysts say initial impressions of the damage leave no concerns. Nasa are continuing to investigate these “dings” further to make sure that there is no concerns for re-entry.

Throughout the day, the crew prepared for Wednesday’s rendezvous with the Hubble Space Telescope. The day’s activities included the check out of tools they will use during the rendezvous with the telescope
Nasa

The docking of the shuttle will be shown live on NasaTV where astronaut McArthur will use the shuttles robotic arm to latch onto and secure the telescope, go to www.nasa.gov/ntv for full coverage.

Not a Pre in sight, there is a telescope however!

09 May

imageSo it’s been aaages since I wrote anything about space, Nasa or missions so I thought now would be an opportune moment. Monday at 2.01pm EDT (7.01pmBST) an iconic mission is due to blast off, STS-125 is the final mission to service the Hubble Telescope.

During the 11-day mission’s five spacewalks, astronauts will install two new instruments, repair two inactive ones and perform the component replacements that will keep the telescope functioning into at least 2014.
Nasa

This mission will be the last time humans visit the telescope that has been exploring deep space since 1990, It was placed into orbit by Discovery in April of that year and sent it’s 1st images back to earth soon after.

The mission is also of a different nature to missions that service the ISS. Should something go wrong in the mission or launch and the crew become stranded the shuttle would not have enough supplies to extend the mission by more than 25 days (at the ISS the crew can stay for up to 90 days). Shuttle Endeavour is ready on launch pad 39b to execute a rescue in the unlikely event that something does go wrong.

Unlike shuttle missions to the International Space Station, which can sustain a stranded crew for up to 90 days, space shuttle Atlantis’ flight to the Hubble Space Telescope offers no additional supplies other than those carried aboard the orbiter.
Nasa

AT 22.45 BST this evening the Mission Management Team concluded in a pre flight meeting that they were not working any issues and all teams concluded that they are “go” for Mondays launch.

I know I will be watching the launch for this final Hubble mission and I suggest you do too. Go to www.nasa.gov/ntv to see live footage, or if you are using Windows Vista click here to download a sidebar gadget that will stream directly to your desktop.

New year, new theme

07 May

So this is something I have wanted to get complete since the beginning of the year and after some very hard work by my friend and housemate Dave Marsland it is complete. Sadly for Robert Scoble my old header has gone. However I have a new header and a new funky looking site. It is 99% done, barring a few minor changes here and there. It has been bug checked also but should you find any please email me here.

Hope you like it, I do!!!

P.S Oh I do also realise that the blog has been heavily Pre laden recently, don’t worry I have some very non Pre items to post this weekend! Including 2 reviews!
