Palm Pre Developments….

30 Apr

So since Palm announced the Pre huge amount of rumors have been floating around the Internet about things such as carriers, release dates etc etc. I thought I would round up some of the more recent and interesting developments.

Firstly we have the release date:

  • Precentral.net managed to get hold of a leaked Sprint document detailing some information about the Pre (amongst other devices) and labels the release date as the 7th of June. To compound this rumor Palm made a casting call for a “viral video” which is scheduled to be filmed from the 29th of April to the 5th of June. Precentral says the part is for a guy being upset that the Pre hasn’t been released yet. It’s going to be a “protest”, and the guy won’t leave his apartment until it’s released.
  • We also know that Palms main competitor is Apple and the iPhone and the 7th of June is the likely to be the day before the World Wide Developer Conference at which Apple is doing a Keynote!

Next on the list is the number of devices available:

  • Bloomberg.com reports that Palm may cap the number of devices made this year to 400,000 in a attempt to make it seem more alluring to customers. This will also relate to the cost of the device which Palm in my opinion needs to be very careful about. They cannot afford to set it too high, the 8GB iPhone sells for $199 and for me that means the Pre needs to be under that by at least $40. Palm has had troubles recently and has been left by the wayside in the rankings, they need to get a good device out there to a mass market to prove they can beat the competition then bring in higher cost devices later down the line.

Lastly we have another Pre:

Mike Arrington of Techcrunch wrote today that:

One of our better sources indicated to us that Palm is “very far along” on a second Pre-like device and currently has plans to put it on the market in the late part of 2009, possibly as early as the Fall.

If this is true then maybe Palm will put the device price a bit lower and limit the number handsets available, this would leave room then for a more expensive device later on this year once public approval of the Pre comes through (assuming it does).

I think you’ll agree there are some interesting and some strange rumors floating around at the moment. I wait with baited breath to see what’s next!

Hurricane Copyright hits The Pirate Bay

18 Apr

Posted by mobile phone:
Yesterday a little bit of internet history was created. The four people behind the Pirate Bay file sharing site were convicted and sentenced for helping to share copyrighted material. Each face a year in jail and have to pay a share of 2.3 million in damages.

Of course this isn’t a final ruling as the quartet plan to appeal the decision which, in all likelyhood will take another year at least.
The Pirate Bay team insist that the site will continue and that this ruling affects nothing.

In reality it does change things, it opens the door for the record producers and film producers to take anyone they suspect of sharing or helping to share content illegally to court. Now they know that the case can be won expect to see more occurances.

Skype vs Ebay, the latest

15 Apr

So since I posted the story about the Skype founders attempting to buy the company back from Ebay more news has developed.

It appears sources close the attempt have said that the offer made was well off the mark of what Ebay were looking for. The Wall Street Journals source said that the private equity firms Zennstrom and Friis had been in talks with were willing to stump up $1bn. This figure ($2.1bn lower than Skypes’ original purchase price) is “far apart” from what Ebay wants for the company.

Then to make matters even more interesting, Ebay released a statement yesterday stating their intentions to raise an IPO for Skype, float it on the NYSE and make it a separate company. This changes the game quite a bit for Zennstrom and Friis, of course on the statement from Ebay it states that should circumstances change the IPO may never go ahead. A standard clause yes, but it does leave the door open for a revised bid from the founders.

Skype founder set to bid to Ebay???

14 Apr

Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, the founders of Skype, have approached several private equity firms and are pooling their own substantial resources to make a bid for the Internet calling service, say several people with knowledge of their plans.
NY Times

Ebay bought the company back in 2005 for $2.6 billion which later increased to $3.1bn after some bonus payouts. However since the purchase, Skype has not really done anything major (barring a few releases for previously unsupported platforms (iphone, blackberry)). It certainly has not done anything that would not have been accomplished without Ebay. Also Ebay execs have agreeded that Skype has little ties to it’s core business and apart from adding some call the seller buttons within the site, integration has been pretty lack lustre.

CEO of Skype has also signaled that he would be willing to sell Skype for the right price, a mere $1.7bn according to analysts. There are some issues with selling Skype however, a pending legal action between Ebay and Skype over the intellectual property of the core tech behind the service may well put off other bidders:

In a regulatory filing April 1, eBay disclosed that Joltid, a company founded by Mr. Zennstrom and Mr. Friis, had terminated eBay’s license to Joltid’s peer-to-peer technologies, which are at the heart of Skype’s calling service.
NY Times

There was speculation that Ebay may sell Skype to another large corporation but with Google just releasing Google Voice, people are probably quite reluctant to enter such a market now, and as Google was the losing bidder in the initial sale they most likely wouldn’t be interested.

If it does go through however then Skype would have a serious uphill struggle to keep it’s growth going,  it needs to move beyond cheap calling and expand it’s services and market. We have already seen signs of Skype’s growth slowing. During the 4th quarter of 2008 Skype:

  • had sales of $145 million for the quarter, up 26 percent year-over-year, but only $2 million higher than the prior quarter.
  • added 35 million new users to stand at more than 405 million registered users.
  • saw SkypeOut minutes go to 2.6 billion from 2.2 billion in the third quarter of 2008.
  • saw Skype-to-Skype minutes go to 20.5 billion from 16.5 billion in the third quarter of 2008.
    GIGAOM

To sell an additional 400 million Skype-Out minutes but only have $2 million in actual sales is pretty poor and at the same time used FREE Skype to Skype minutes were increased by 4 billion in 1 quarter. In a year on year performance Skype’s figures equate to “a 47 percent rise in the number of users generated a roughly 47 percent increase in usage of its free service” GigaOM

So as you can see the company may still be growing albeit at a much slower rate, but it’s not making much money for all the growth!

UPDATE: To add to all this speculation it was just announced that StumbleUpon who were also bought by Ebay have had the founders buy it back. Even more fuel for the fire that Ebay is looking to sell off it’s baggage to generate cash and focus on it’s core product!!!

Allway Sync… A perfect sync??

11 Apr

No, I am not going to apologise again, I had a few computer issues over the past few days (namely a virus my AV and firewall failed to stop)

Allway Sync is an item of software I have used for a number of years now and I thought it was about time I did a review. The program is totally free to personal users, however corporate or very heavy users need to buy a pro license from the website for a mere $19.95.

Allway Sync is free file and folder synchronization software for Windows.

Allway Sync uses innovative synchronization algorithms to synchronize your data between desktop PCs, laptops, USB drives and more. Allway Sync combines bulletproof reliability with an extremely easy-to-use interface.

One synchronization software provides all these solutions

  • Sync data between your desktop PC and laptop (notebook).
  • Replicate and back-up data between your home and office computers.
  • Synchronize more than two directories.
  • Update and back-up files over a local network or the Internet.
  • Synchronize removable devices (USB key, flash drive, CDRW) with a local drive. Get both the performance of local drives and the mobility of removable drives. USB key lost or damaged? Your local drive always has an up-to-date copy. Hard drive crash? Your removable drive has the most current version of all your critical data.

www.allwaysync.com

I have used it in many of the situations above, my primary use however, is for both for pen drives, and hard drives, in fact it currently operates as a faux mirrored raid array between two disks to replicate data changes on one HD to another thus making sure that I am always protected. It had no problem at all doing the initial copy of 265GB between disks and now if anything changes on the primary disk then it is replicated to the secondary one. The setup for that took less than 5 mins and to be honest can be done in under 10 mouse clicks!

One element about it that I love is that you can set a job to sync upon detection of a USB drive being attached. So if you want to keep a directory synced with a pen drive all you have to do is plug it in and changed in both directions will be made since the last sync, easy!!

It’s never crashed, gone wrong or failed to do it’s job, as a result I would recommend it to ANYONE in both corporate or personal environments. It’s a fantastic bit of software.

Wow, where has the time gone

07 Apr

Well well well, yet again I find myself writing a blog post apologising for a lack of blog posts. Since returning from holiday I seem to have been stuck in 3rd gear and until the last couple of days I have not really managed to engage 5th or even 4th, I have now pretty much got back up to speed. Starting tomorrow I will be blogging again as you would expect and as I have set out at the beginning of the year.

A few things I want to write about over the next few days:

Friendfeed

Twitter and Google

Vista SP2

RFID (this post will be a couple of weeks away as I need to do some research into it)

Those few things are just a sneak peak at what’s to come, I’m certainly looking forward to writing them, as I hope you are about reading them.
