My blog helps me claim on my insurance.

29 Jan

So as I said a couple of days ago, I was burgled last week. I am not going to labour on that but one of the things stolen was my video camera.

I needed to give proof of purchase this week to the insurance broker for the camera. The problem was that the receipt is in storage and I had no way of getting it. I went to Currys (where I bought the camera) and to get a repeat receipt I needed the date I bought it (amongst other things). There was no way I could remember that, but I did remember that I had blogged about the camera the day after I bought it. So I looked back and worked out the exact date of purchase. Then I was able to get the copy receipt and send it off. I am still waiting for the claim to go though.

Seesmic, is it sustainable

28 Jan

So I have been following seesmic’s development from day one. I was going to write a review but that has been done. I am going to take a different angle.

1st a quick overview: Seesmic is a social application allowing you to record video segments onto the site using your webcam (or using youtube videos). It is designed and marketed as a conversation medium and that is how it is used.

It’s a fantastic concept and it works well. Yes it lacks a mobile interface and the ability to post from mobile (there is one being developed and there are some hacks created by users to do this but no official application yet). The system works perfectly for what it was designed to do and has seen a explosion in popularity since the very beginning.

What I want to ascertain is, “what is the future for this concept?” Yes you can have face to face conversations, yes you can interact with a large audience and get feedback really easily and yes I do love it. I though cannot see any real progression for this above it’s initial use. Go too far in one direction and you’ll end up being another (slightly more social) youtube. Go too far in the other direction and you get facebook with video. It needs a niche that no other social web app has to stay competitive.

One big advantage it has is it’s founder, Loic Le Meur, a proven successful entrepreneur and someone who has great vision and scope. If anyone could make this social application successful it will most likely be him.

I am sold on the initial concept yes what I am not sold on is it’s future and sustainability. I hope it succeeds I really do but at the moment I am not too sure. I hope I’m wrong. If Loic reads this I would love his comments back either in a Seesmic post or an email

OMG, what a hectic 2 weeks

28 Jan

Ok the last two weeks have been bonkers for me. Here is a quick roundup of all the things I have done.

  • Went job hunting
  • Got a new job
  • Worked on my online venture
  • Started my new job
  • Got Burgled (yeah someone broke in and stole my vid camera and my mates laptop)
  • Applied for an insurance claim for the burglary
  • Rebuilt my PC for a 2nd time in 2 weeks (damn file corruption)
  • Played to many PC games.

So all in all it has been packed. The new job is going well (I now work for Orange selling phones in-store) and I am really enjoying it.

Burglaries suck that’s all I am going to say about that.

Oh and rebuilding my PC also is really boring!

Ok moaning over. I still have my list of items to blog about (some are now a little be old but I will write about them anyway). So I will be looking to post at least once a day from now.

Ok now update over, return to doing what you were doing. Thank you.

Tomb Raider boss gets the sack

14 Jan

The company that owns the Tomb Raider franchise turned on the management last week. Jane Cavanagh founded SCi Entertainment 20 years ago and this weekend her position as CEO was described by a top investor, Bill Ennis who is also Cavanagh’s husband.

It looks as though unless SCi borrow £30m they will be dead in the water by May or June. SCi announced recently that they have delayed the release of its new games including Tomb Raider Underworld. This delay has forced the company into needing this loan. SCi had been in talks since last September with company’s to buy the floundering firm but over the last 5 months these talks fell apart as did the share prices. In July 2007 the shares in the company were valued at 520p a share as of 8:50am they were at 58p a share.

The worst past about this was that Cavanagh had insisted that the company was fine and there was nothing to worry about, then all of a sudden the companies corporate brokers Citigroup were forced to announce a profit warning. As a result the management are set to be replaced with Phil Rogers (the current finance director) set to take temporary charge of the company until a full replacement can be found.

It looks like someone could grab a lucrative franchise quite cheap at the moment. I just hope that something is done so TR: Underworld can still be released!

What a good start to the year.

13 Jan

3 posts done, then a big gap, wonderful. I said in my last post “I am going to see if I can beat that figure” when talking about my yearly word count, if I keep going this way I know I won’t!

I did have a few things this last week that hampered me in writing anything. 1st I moved back to Sheffield last weekend and managed to leave my laptop at my parents house. 2nd, as I had got parts for my desktop machine for xmas (and had the OS hard drive fail 3 days before I left for xmas) that was out of action when I got back.

I had ordered some new RAM and a new hard drive for it before I left my parents house and they were due to turn up Monday so that was not too bad.

They did arrive (at 8:45am to be precise) and so Monday was spent rebuilding my desktop and reinstalling a lot of things. Tuesday was spent job hunting as the cash flow situation is a little dry at the moment. As one of the new parts I got for my desktop was a graphics card I ended up spending all of Wednesday playing games to see how far I could push it! There is no way of saying how good TimeShift looks without showing you (possible video segment there). Thursday was spent working on putting the last applications back onto my PC and playing more games. Then Friday I had a job interview (and got the job :D ). Yesterday was spent playing Guitar Hero and working on my current web venture, as well as going to the panto in Sheffield. That brings us to today.

I have a list of things to blog about and I am determined to get them posted this coming week so stay tuned!

I know last year I posted a lot while CES was on, this year I decided I would just do a round up post of the top 5 things to come from CES this year. I am compiling that list at the moment so that post will make an appearance next week!

So, apologies for the light blogging, I have lots of plans for next week and then next month as a whole. Keep those eyes peeled!

Pleasantly Surprised

02 Jan

I was compiling 2007’s blog book yesterday (I use Lulu.com to put my blog into a book for personal reference). In a year I felt that I had not done enough blogging (especially with having all of August off) it turns out I wrote a hell of a lot more than 2006. I wrote near enough 35,000 words last year. In 2006 that figure was only 21,000. That I must admit it surprised me, I had felt bad for not writing enough and not posting regularly, I still do feel bad, but not as bad as I did. 35,000 words I think is reasonably good, but as I do not have anything else to compare it with it is hard to say for certain. I am going to see if I can beat that figure this year, I am not going to keep tabs on it though. Come Jan 2009 I’ll add the words up and see what we get. I also want to do more video segments if I can, I want to do more demos of things, more experiments etc. Lot’s more to come this year I know I am looking forward to it!

2007 My View

01 Jan

Well the year has ended and we are now into 2008, I have to say it seems to have gone by so quickly, it seems like only few weeks ago I was waiting with bated breath to see what was coming out of CES 07 and now, in 5 days CES 08 starts.

I have been contemplating over the last few days what an amazing year it has been for technology and web applications. It was definitely a good year for the likes of Facebook and Twitter, social networking exploded into full force and looks to continue its amazing growth pattern well into 2008. Late bloomers in 2007 were Seesmic, Kyte.tv and qik.com (which literally has appeared in the last few weeks) all these use video as their social networking medium and it appears that home created video is the next craze that will sweep the internet. Lets get back to the year gone though: (more…)

What a few weeks….

01 Jan

Apologies for no posts in the last 15 days, not long after my last post my OS hard drive in my PC decided it was going to fail so I have had no desktop PC (and still don’t (new HD is on order)). Then before I knew what was happening I was going home to my parents for xmas and promptly got the most awful cold which, was not the most pleasant thing to endure all of Christmas. I am only just now getting rid of the last remains of it! That brings us to now. It’s New Years Eve and I am sitting at my parents house writing what will be my last post of 2007. I am going to write up a brief review of 2007 but I will post that after midnight.

2007 has been a great year, Roll on 2008!!
