Vodafone gets court ruling on T-mobiles iPhone sales in Germany

23 Nov

DUESSELDORF -(Dow Jones)- The German unit of Vodafone Group PLC (VOD) has obtained a restraining order against Deutsche Telekom AG’s (DT) T-Mobile unit prohibiting the German telecommunications giant from selling Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone in Germany.

Specifically, Vodafone is questioning the iPhone’s exclusive use in T-Mobile’s network and the use of the device being limited to certain fees within T- Mobile’s subscription offerings.

Vodafone isn’t generally opposed to T-Mobile’s exclusivity contract with Apple, but wants to have these new sales practices examined, the spokesman said. The restraining order doesn’t aim at a total sales stop, he added.

I have tried to stay away from iPhone news mainly as though I like the UI the features are pretty lame (when talking about usability). Also the unjustified cost of the device when you have to agree to a contract as well really “Grinds my Gears” (yes I too like Family guy)

This though is quite funny really so I thought I ‘d post it! I think Vodafone are just grumpy at T-Mobile winning the German iPhone contract!

Firefox 3 Beta 1 is out

23 Nov

Yeah, Firefox 3 Beta 1 is now Publicly available! I have been using it for the past few days and well… it’s OK. Nothing special has changed really, a few tweaks to the UI and the memory handling is a lot better (IE and FF now use the same amount of memory for equivalent data) but on the whole not much is different. For the mainstream user I would not bother getting this beta as the plugins and such are not yet supported.

Let’s see what beta 2 brings us!

UK Government loses 25 Million peoples records

23 Nov

Two computer discs holding the personal details of all families in the UK with a child under 16 have gone missing.

The Child Benefit data on them includes name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number and, where relevant, bank details of 25 million people.

So our wonderful Government (well a department of it) has gone and lost these discs and to top it off they were totally un-encrypted! They sent the data by internal mail (using a delivery company) and the package was in no way recorded or tracked! If you are sending data of such importance why the HELL is it not recorded, encrypted and delivered by hand to the appropriate person???

BBC Reports:

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officials were warned to ensure CDs containing benefit details of 25 million people were delivered “as safely as possible”.

The warning from a National Audit Office (NAO) official was sent 16 days before the information went missing.

This is just stupid!

Facebook entering a world of Hurt???

23 Nov

Facebook has supposedly offered zhanzuo.com, a Chinese social networking site $85 million to buy it outright. The bosses at Facebook have wanted to enter the Chinese market for a while:

Facebook already boasts more than 100,000 users of its English-language network in China and rumours of its local-language entry were fuelled with the company’s recent registration in China of the domain facebook.cn.

Entering the Chinese market carries risks for foreign companies.

The publicity that surrounded Yahoo!’s decision to comply with Chinese police demands to provide details of the e-mails of Shi Tao, a journalist later sentenced to ten years in jail on charges of leaking state secrets, has served as a warning to outside players.

Moreover, censorship and state monitoring of the internet provide a potential quagmire for would-be internet entrants.

Google has an Android

16 Nov

Ok they don’t have a physical “Android” but they do have “Android”. They have released an SDK of their highly anticipated Google phone OS. To be honest I have not heard anything that special about it. Many people have said that there is nothing unique or inventive about the SDK. There is nothing that will give the customer something new to play with. At the moment the Google phone concept, seems to be “just another option” in a competitive market of Phone OS’s. The iPhone combined new unique hardware with a new OS and that “at least in America” has proved successful. “Android” at the moment, I do not envision being as popular as that. Of course things could change. We all wait with baited breath I am sure.

New Phone

09 Nov

Man it’s late (The fact that it is so late caused the really poor title) my brain is totally scrambled! Anyway I saw this the other day and it looks pretty interesting! No HSDPA mind, bit still, 600 hours standby battery o.O and GPS! Defo worth a consideration I think.

Vodafone UK just unveiled a new Windows Mobile 6 Professional smartphone – the Vodafone v1520. This touchscreen Pocket PC phone features a large 3.5″ screen and is designed for line of business applications and navigation by featuring triband GSM/GPRS/EDGE at 900/1800/1900 MHz, singleband UMTS at 2100 MHz, Bluetooth and WiFi as well as sporting an integrated GPS receiver and a 2 megapixel camera.
At a size of 121 x 170 x 16.5 mm, the Vodafone v1520 weights 188 g. Talktime is given with amazing 12 hours and standby is – according to Vodafone UK – 600 hours

Thanks to Arne at www.theunwired.net for that info above!

5 New iGoogle themes!

08 Nov

Do you use iGoogle? If not, why not???

iGoogle (formerly Google Personalized Homepage) is a customizable homepage originally launched in May 2005. Updates include the capability to add web feeds and Google Gadgets (similar to those available on Google Desktop).

It was renamed and expanded on April 30, 2007 and is currently available in several localized versions of Google: U.S., Australia, India, Canada, the U.K., Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Russia, Denmark, Sweden and Ireland

Today Google released 5 new themes:

Solar System: For those of you who like to space out, this theme will help you do so. Enjoy a different scene from our solar system on your iGoogle homepage, each day of the week.

Autumn: The leaves are falling and the air is crisp. It’s fall, and the raccoons are enjoying every bit of it. Follow them through the day as they tackle the onslaught of leaves and prepare for a barbecue feast.

Hong Kong: It’s the Hong Kong skyline in soft beautiful colors. Add this lively cosmopolitan city to your homepage and watch as the day goes by.

J. R.: Introducing J.R., the friendly giant monster who makes his home on your iGoogle homepage. Follow him throughout the day as he keeps himself busy going about his daily chores and hanging out with his friends.Aja Tiger: From the cave looking out, follow the Aja Tiger through the day and the seasons. This Korean theme is a fun and friendly one for your iGoogle homepage.

Personally for me the best of the lot is the Solar System theme and that is what I am using!

Enjoy
