Palm needs help,

15 Oct

Oh dear it seems to go from bad to worse. It seems Palm is in quite a lot of bother. Over the past 8 months they have got nothing but bad press. They cancelled the Foleo (I guess they realised it was erm…. not going to sell), they got a dressing down from Engadget in an open letter and now they have said their new operating system will be at least another 18 months in development. I have always been a palm fan (for my palm device history search for “The end of the palm OS” in the search box on the left). Actually I am writing this on a palm Treo 750v. It’s a WM6 device though, not a Palm OS one. It’s not that I don’t like the Palm OS it’s just I have used WM devices for a number of years now and I am used to them. Also this was available on Vodafone in the UK so I could get it for free. If they had the 755 (the palm version) instead then I would have got that. Anyway I digress. Palm have been losing ground rapidly over the past years and even though a Private Equity firm run by U2’s Bono no less have stepped in to give the company a much needed boost we have seen little from them. Delaying the OS this much in my opinion is a risk, a big risk. It means that devices in the time period will either be utilising the old Palm OS which everyone agrees is a little outdated or WM which, will of course, pull the WM fans but they risk losing the Palm OS fans to other devices. As far as I can see if it’s going to be 18 months then Palm need to release a Fantastic device that blows the socks off the competition and use the current palm OS (and make it upgradeable to the new OS). That should keep peoples radar trained on Palm. If they don’t then they will have a steep hill to climb to get back into the market.

Google buys Jaiku

11 Oct

Yeah ok I am a bit slow out of the starting blocks on this one, ok maybe the race has already finished but hey we can’t all break the news!

On Oct. 9th the guys at Jaiku put up a blog post telling the nation that they had been bought.

I suppose the big question is why not Twitter???? Well I personally don’t know, Twitter has a bigger user base and seems to be growing faster. This purchase certainly will give Jaiku the scaling opportunities that Twitter so desperately needs! A lot of people have been saying that this will be the end of Twitter but of course, it won’t. I am sure someone such as Yahoo or even maybe (god forbid) Microsoft will come in an buy up the young company and give it a platform to shout from.

We will have to wait and see what Google does with Jaiku as they are keeping very tight lipped about it all.

If there is any more news on this I’ll let ya know!

Ok so here goes.

It’s time for a list of apologies and explanations I believe.

Firstly sorry for not blogging for the past however many days it has been, my life has been so crazy it’s not true.

Right to the explanation. I moved back to Sheffield about 2 weeks ago and I am now back at University for the final year. I also have been dealing with a few things in my businesses as well so that has taken a lot of my time. Then to top all that I have been developing a new site/venture that you will all learn about soon.

On a plus note I have found a solution to my mobile blogging conundrum and as a result this post is being written on a train speeding towards out capital city (London). I am using a paid for version of MobiBlogger (the free does not allow custom blogs to be used). It works well barring the image posting. You cannot specify a smaller size for the image so when I posted an image it was MASSIVE and totally out of proportion. As a result any images I post will go straight to flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewwardlaw .

Oh this does not seem to change url’s to hyperlinks either. Oh well there is a flickr thing in the sidebar, click that to get to my picture. There has been so much happen in tech this last 2/3 weeks I am not going to try to do a summary. I will blog about things I feel are important and have a real backlog of things to get through in Google reader. I will work through them asap. This weekend though I am without laptop or desktop as I am on travels so I only have my mobile phone. Blogging my be light as a result. That’s a great start isn’t it; “Hi sorry for not blogging, oh yeah by the way I’m not going to be blogging for this weekend.” Well I am not going to promise a full blogging service will resume on Monday but I will try my hardest. Now things are settled it should be a lot easier. You can always follow me on twitter. http://www.twitter.com/andrewwardlaw

bye for now
