IBM Launches new supercomputer

27 Jun

The worlds fastest supercomputer has been launched by IBM. The Blue Gene/P is 3 times faster than the current record holder the Blue Gene/L. This latest machine holds 294,912 processors connected via and optical network and as a result operates at petaflop speeds (the equivalent of 1,000 trillion calculations per second.

IMB will install the computer at the Department of Energy in Illinois US later this year. The BBC states that “Two further machines are planned for US laboratories and a fourth has been bought by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council for its Daresbury Laboratory Cheshire.”

Blair Resigns, Brown forms new government

27 Jun

Tony Blair-bigWell after 10 years in office Tony Blair is now just plain old “Mr Blair”. The former Prime minister met with the Queen today to offer his resignation thus allowing his successor Gordon Brown to take Office.

In my opinion Mr Blair’s legacy will not be Iraq as many say it will, but will infact be Ireland and his achievements in the Peace Process. Overall I think he did a reasonable job in his 10 years and did the right thing in leaving on his terms and chose a good point to go.

His Successor met with the Queen for 54 minutes today and is supposed to have outlined his plans for the country. On leaving the place and returning to No. 10 Mr Brown said:

“This will be a new government with new priorities. And I have been privileged to have been granted the great opportunity to serve my country.

“And at all times I will be strong in purpose, steadfast in will, resolute in action in the service of what matters to the British people, meeting the concerns and aspirations of our whole country.”

James Gordon Brown was born in February 1951, the second son of Rev Dr John Ebenezer Brown, a Church of Scotland minister.

The family lived in Glasgow until Gordon was three, when they moved to Kirkcaldy, a small industrial town on the northern shore of the Firth of Forth and the area he represents in Parliament today.

I’ll be interested to see what comes of his 1st few days in office!

iPhone…………

26 Jun

Ok so the iPhone is due out Friday, and the world and it’s brother seem to be going nuts. AT&T have been issued with guidelines on how to deal with customers camping outside the stores, the papers in the US have been full of stories about the iPhone and the forums and blogs have been flooded with posts! Even the chat at Chris Pirillo Live is talking about it as I write this!

Now I know I said in the past that I did not like the iPhone and in certain respects I still feel the same way. Though having said that and having seen the promo video for the iPhone, I do like the way it behaves and how it functions. The ability to use 2 fingers concurrently is a fantastic achievement and the User Interface (UI) is outstanding. The promo video shows the UI in a very good light (as you would expect) and from that I have seen some features I would love integrated into my Treo. Apple really seem to have pulled out a fantastic design for the UI, it’s intuitive, good looking and fast!

All this is well and good but it is still missing 2 vital features! 1) No 3G/HSDPA/EVDO of any kind only GPRS data 2) Only a 2mp camera not the 5mp the N95 has. These 2 features alone would totally put me off the iPhone that has a price tag of $400 as well as a monthly contract!

Sure make the phone $100 with the contract or $400 sim free but not both together! If I am going to pay $80 a month in mobile service I want a free or dam cheap phone! Sure initial sales will be good and sure the diehard apple fans are going to rush out to buy one, but only time will tell on whether or not the iPhone users have more money than sense, or if Apple are forced to drop the price to bolster the sales of the device!

Google Web Accelerator slows down firefox?

25 Jun

Most of you will know, I am a big Google fan and I very rarely moan about the firm but today I have a little quibble. I installed Google web accelerator last weekend and all it seems to do is slow down my browsing experience in Firefox. Images take much longer to load than when it is disabled and half the time I get the server error message that web accelerator produces when it cannot find what it is looking for!

I don’t know if it is Vista or Firefox issue or even a Firefox on Vista issue, all I do know is it’s bugging me BIG time!

Anyone else experienced this? Let me know!

P.S. Sorry for the lack of posting over the weekend, I was working most of it and had no time to stop and post!

1st Attempt aborted NASA now aiming for slot 2

22 Jun

Uncooperative weather at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., forced flight controllers to pass on STS-117’s first landing attempt today. The crew and the Mission Control team have turned their attention to the next orbit, which has opportunities available in Florida and at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

Kennedy is the primary site and the next landing opportunity at the Florida spaceport is at 3:55 p.m. EDT. If flight controllers select this option, Commander Rick Sturckow and Pilot Lee Archambault will perform the deorbit engine burn at 2:50 p.m. to begin the descent to Florida. The Edwards landing opportunity is at 3:49, with the deorbit occurring at 2:43.

Just listening to NASA tv now and it seems like the weather is not improving too much!

I am not going to be near a PC for the next few hours (sadly I may well miss the landing) so I recommend you head to http://www.nasa.gov to check the progress of the site!

If I can update you I will!

Atlantis gets an extra day in space

21 Jun

All attempts to land the shuttle have been scrubbed for today as weather thwarts the teams at NASA.

The next landing opportunities are on Friday

“The first opportunity Friday is on Orbit 218 and calls for a deorbit burn at 1:16 p.m. The second is on Orbit 219, with the deorbit burn at 2:52 p.m. and landing at 3:54 p.m. at Kennedy.

If Florida weather does not cooperate, three opportunities are available at Edwards. The first is on Orbit 219. This afternoon, the crew will adjust Atlantis’ orbit to set the stage for this opportunity, which has the deorbit burn occurring at 2:46 p.m. and landing at 3:49 p.m.

The second opportunity for the California base is on Orbit 220. The deorbit burn would occur at 4:21 p.m. and landing at 5:24 p.m. The final opportunity is one orbit later which calls for the deorbit burn to occur at 5:58 p.m. and landing at 6:59 p.m.”

(all times are EDT)

1st Atlantis oppOrtunity scrubbed

21 Jun

An unfavorable weather forecast at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., forced flight controllers to pass on STS-117’s first landing opportunity. Hopes now turn to the day’s second opportunity at 3:30 p.m. EDT (8.30 p.m. BST).

There are currently thunderstorms in the area around the Shuttle Landing facility. Chief Astronaut Steve Lindsey is currently in the shuttle training aircraft relaying information to NASA officials.

If flight controllers wave off for second time today, opportunities are available Friday in Florida and at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

I’ll keep you posted on any further announcements!

A New plaxo coming!

20 Jun

Plaxo the contact plugin for outlook is due to release a new version on Monday! Scoble reported after visiting Plaxo for the ScobleShow.

“They are coming out with a new set of services on Monday. All I can say is “wow.””

I used Plaxo for a while and then stopped as it just pissed me off! I’ll wait to see what they come out with on Monday!

Atlantis heads home

20 Jun

The shuttle Atlantis and its crew left the international space station Tuesday and sailed into the homestretch of the mission with a landing on Thursday

The only issue facing the crew now is the weather. Should NASA give them an “All Clear” today then Atlantis is due to touchdown at 12.54pm CDT (18.54 BST).

The forecast includes showers, thunderstorms and low clouds for the prime landing opportunity in Florida and a backup opportunity at 2:29 p.m. Rain could damage fragile silica tiles that shield much of the spacecraft, and a lighting strike could disrupt the electronic gear that controls the shuttle’s flight.

According to NASA the crew has enough provisions to stay in space till Sunday!

I’ll keep my eyes peeled on the website and keep you posted on any developments.
