Death threats to a fellow blogger

27 Mar

Kathy Sierra has been interested in the brain and artificial intelligence since her days as a game developer (Virgin, Amblin’, MGM). She is the co-creator of the bestselling Head First series (finalist for a Jolt Software Development award in 2003, and named to the Amazon Top Ten Editors Choice Computer Books for 2003 and 2004). She is also the founder of one of the largest community web sites in the world, javaranch.com. Kathy’s passions are skiing, running, her Icelandic horse, gravity, and her latest favorite thing–Dance Dance Revolution

Sadly this incredible person who has obviously affected many people (just look at the comments in her most recent blog entry) has been receiving sick, disgusting, stomach churning threats to her life and as a result is now afraid to leave the house. These are not the some mediocre little threats either, just read Kathy’s post and you will see what these vile people have been saying.

I can’t help but think (and my thoughts are echoed by many others) that because Kathy is a woman in the predominantly male industry that is technology, that she becomes a target for these jerks and that makes me really angry. There is not enough women in tech and things like this are exactly why!

Many bloggers are taking the week off in support of Kathy and I am too, I will be back Monday, let’s spend this week trying to think of a way we can filter out and quash these scumbags who do this to such lovely people.

Kathy, my thoughts are with you, be strong.

The one complaint about my Mobile Fixed

26 Mar

In November last year I got a Palm Treo750v and whilst I love this phone and think it really is the best thing since sliced bread, I have always had one complaint.

Why have Vodafone removed the MSN client software from WM5.0??? Well I know why, it allows them to make more money by having the pay per msg client that is installed on it! I have been searching for months for a way to put the MSN software back on the device and I have finally found a way

http://www.coolsmartphone.com/index.php?option=news&task=viewarticle&sid=2266

Thanks to the team at coolsmartphone I now have MSN back on my Treo and it works wonderfully!

Yes I know the article is for a different phone but after trying it on my Treo I can confirm it works! Here’s the proof!

A380 Video

24 Mar

So as some of you may know I am a bit of a airplane/aeronautics nut, and one of the things that has interested me a lot in the past 4 years has been the airbus A380. Now although it’s nearly 2 years late and faced lots of problems in the design and build phase, it is now ready and commercially available (well as soon as Airbus can manufacture some). I saw a video today taking a tour of the A380 and showing it up in the air!

A very interesting video if you ask me, now all I want is a chance to fly in one of these!

I guess I was doubly Twitterpissed!

23 Mar

So someone just pointed out to me that I had already written about twitter a few months back (to be honest I had forgotten entirely that I had). I’ll try not to duplicate things again, though writing about it before and having the same feelings now as I do then just emphasises the point I am making!

In other news: In about 25 minutes the PS3 is officially “on sale” here in the UK. Many stores including HMV and Virgin Megastores are opening their doors at midnight for those lucky few who have the £425 spare to spend on a games console! I am not one of them, and no matter how much I want it I cannot justify spending nearly £500 on one! I have used the console at the Game On exhibition I went to (you can see video footage of it here) and yes it is incredible (if you have a 32” HDTV) but the price tag just doesn’t cut it for me!

Anyone got/getting one? Let me know your thoughts contact details are in the left sidebar!

Uber Cool Technology

21 Mar

I was watching a video today from the Podtech Network and more importantly the ScobleShow side of Podtech.

Robert attended the Microsoft TechFest event held by Microsofts research department recently and saw some of the most incredible new technology and research around! I wanted to draw attention to one specific bit of his video though. Click the link below to view the video and scroll through to the 10min mark and watch the item with Andy Wilson who has been developing some neat things using infrared cameras! It was honestly the coolest thing I have ever seen!!

Great Video Robert thanks!

There is also a video of the infrared cams segment on the Microsoft Research site

UPDATE: The whole video is SUPER cool if you have an hour to watch it I really think you should, so much cool stuff coming from Microsoft it seems!!!

Something to fill the Ze void

20 Mar

I’m missing Ze Frank, I have found myself watching his last show at least 3 times in the last 2 days and other shows in his archive because he’s just not there anymore. The feed in google reader lies dormant, lifeless and still and has sort of left a void. Something I used to do everyday for more or less a year has gone and I need something to fill it. Something that takes between 2 and 5 minutes a day and makes me laugh. Anyone got any ideas on what I could do? E-mail me or comment here with your suggestions!

Google Add's Themes to Personalised homepages

20 Mar

I as most of you know am a big Google fan. In fact as I write this I am listening to an interview with Google’s Eric Schmidt.

I logged onto my home page this afternoon (yes it was 1:45pm before I loaded IE today ) and there was a new item at the top right of the screen “New! Select Theme”. I was like a magpie seeing something shiny when I saw that and after a few clicks my home page now looks like this:

 Googlehomepageblurred

It apparently changes the header picture depending on the time of day, weather and season so I will be interested to see over the next few days what it does!!

Yet again Google comes up with another bit of content to make my online experience better! I already loved the personalised home page but to add a bit of colour and spontaneity to it seems to work well! Can anyone stop the monster (albeit a friendly caring monster) that is Google?

Twitter??? Not for me

19 Mar

Twitter, who has heard of it? I know most of America has but over here in the UK I am interested to see what the take up is! I 1st found twitter courtesy of Scoble and decided to sign up and see what the hype is all about.

I am not impressed with Twitter, when suggesting it to my friends they said “that’s stupid” or “what’s the point we’ve got MSN”. Now I am one for being contactable most if not all of the time, I am on MSN(WL), Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, Skype and of course that ancient technology e-mail! Twitter though has not grabbed me, if I want people to know what I am doing I use MSN and add it to my name for example, my name could be “Andy – Going to the pub tonight, feel free to come along” and when my friends or social circle log on to MSN they will see my name and that’s that.

My online life is far too busy at the moment be it, feed reading, keeping in touch with my friends and colleuges via IM and not to mention the blogging and everything else I do on here! Twitter is just one of those time consuming extras that is sooo unnecessary, who the hell wants to know what I am doing every second of the day?? Why have a conversation on twitter when you could IM or e-mail? Ok ok you can interact with people you don’t have on your IM list (and probably wouldn’t want to add to your list), but to be honest if you are talking to complete strangers on twitter you obviously have too much time on your hands!

Oh and as for the mobile feature Chris Pirillo points out the exact problem. I can’t afford to get £1,000 phone bills because I spent my days texting twitter to let people know I am waiting in a queue to buy my lunch!!!!

Twitter is not for me and I don’t see my view changing anytime soon!

Therefore I am officially “Twitterpissed” and everyone needs to stop talking about it!

Rant over

Eidos Jump's on the Steam Bandwagon

17 Mar

Steam is a content delivery, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications service and platform developed by Valve Corporation for digital entertainment.

Edios have just agreed a deal to distribute their games via the Steam interface. Tomb Raider, Commandos and Champ Manager 2007 are just some of the games that will be released in the coming weeks and months.

I was reading an article on Wednesday that was detailing how that Rampant Piracy is threatening the PC games market. Now as far as I know Steam is a totally secure and games bought though the service (such as Half Life and Defcon) cannot be copied as the serial key has to be totally unique and linked to only one user account. What I cannot understand is why do games firms not all sign up with steam and make their software protected by Valves ingenious software? If people had to buy it and the games piracy was stopped then more games would be sold and thus the price would fall (well in an ideal world that would happen).
