I've got the dum dum dee dee

31 Jan

No I have not turned into a drooling idiot overnight, the dum dum dee dee I refer too is the sound that you hear when Windows Vista starts! Yes folks I have been Vistafied.

I got Windows Vista Business Edition on the weekend, and while I was going to wait to install it and avoid all the inevitable bugs and hiccups in the system, I caved in to pressure of the DVD sitting there and whispering “install me, install me now” and so I did! I put it on as a second OS so if everything does go wrong I can just reboot into a working Windows XP system.

__________________________

“So How’s Vista working for you?” I was asked that on Monday by someone who is tempted to install it but wanted a geeky view 1st! I told them how it was going and it made me think “Ooh good post Idea” so here we go:

The install: As it was a fresh install it was all fairly painless. It took it’s pretty time but we got there eventually. The 1st couple of boots were slow because it was adding hardware and software etc but once it had done all that mumbo jumbo it’s a smooth nice looking system. I did have once small issue with the install and configuration of the system though. I have two sound cards in my system. One Creative 7.1 surround sound card for my music, movies, and entertainment and the on board Realtek card that I use for video calling, and anything that needs a headset etc. Anyway the Creative card installed perfectly 1st time but the Realtek card was not recognised and when I clicked update drivers it could not find them on the Windows servers. So clever geek here though ooh let’s chuck on the XP drivers, So in went the CD and on went the drivers, so far so good. Then I restarted, which was a BIG mistake, (well actually, putting XP drivers on a Vista system was the mistake) “ooh look it’s the blue screen of death back to haunt me” yep I had killed Vista in one short mouse click! So it was a restart, boot into safe mode, disable the sound card, and reboot into Vista. Thankfully that worked well and I managed to get it up and running again!

Then right in front of me came up with a box saying “Windows failed to start properly, what would you like to do? A) Find a solution to the problem or B) do nothing. So I chose A, and low and behold it came back with “Your drivers are out of date, do you want to install the new ones?” Funnily enough I said yes and from that point my Realtek card has worked perfectly.

Apart from that Vista is working well, Office 2007 runs like a dream, my computer as a whole is faster and actually is running cooler than when XP is running. The system temp is down by 4oC and the hard drive temperature have also fallen by about that much . All the software I use works fine so far (though I am yet to test Studio 8 and Photoshop CS2) it generally is just smoother than XP.

The Graphics are amazing on Vista too, the Aero features with the transparency and such are super cool and the whole visual effects just seem really funky! One thing I did note on the Graphics side was that my 3DMark 05 score fell from 5035 on XP to 4677 on Vista, which is quite a drop. I thought I would test some games to see what the effect was. Flight Sim X runs better on Vista (as it was really designed to run on it) but Fifa 06, Tomb Raider Legend are slower and I need to turn the graphics down to achieve a decent frame rate. Football Manager is fine (not exactly graphics intensive) and Half Life and CS work as well as they did on XP. So it appears that the —— ok this is freaky as I was writing that sentence this popped up on Google reader (which is on in the background) —— anyway back to what I was saying, So it appears that Vista is not the best gaming platform at the moment unless the games you play are Microsoft ones! There was a Toms Hardware article on it a few weeks ago but I can’t find it now .

I am going to stop now and finish my review of Vista tomorrow as this post is getting a bit long! I am also posting this on my NEW second blog www.technoblog.info I site I am running in conjunction with some other geeks like me – head on over and check it out.

More tomorrow on the world of VISTA.

Today, I got a Friend back

30 Jan

Today, a friend I hold in very high regard started taking to me again after I was a complete k**b to her.

I just wanted to say this so everyone can see it! I am really truly sorry for what I did, I have learn’t my lesson and from that I have become a better person!

Sam, I am really really pleased we are talking again!

Don’t take your friends for granted, because that one time you do, it’ll all back fire and you’ll lose them!

I hope you all have a very happy and friendly day

The Morning After

26 Jan

So it’s the morning after the party in Hull. I feel as rough as sandpaper (about grade 3 I think) and i’m now on the train back to Sheffield. It was and excellent night and good fun was had by all there. It was at a place called Piper in the center of Hull. Tess (the birthday girl) had booked the entire venue out and had been told that if she had 100 guests that it was free. In the end we got about 80 there but they still let her off the booking charge, which I thought was very nice. It’s a good place actually, I would highly recommend it if you are in Hull.

I am going to stop rambling now as this alcohol induced pain my head is enduring is getting worse and I need to shut my eyes for a bit.

Oh yeah and I know I said I would return with photos, well guess what plank left his camera at tess’s house before we left for Piper!!! ME, so sorry no pics!!

Memories Revisited

26 Jan

Raf_tutor_01I was walking through Sheffield yesterday, the sun was shining and there was not a cloud in the sky. As I walked a saw a light aircraft pass overhead and it reminded me of the times I used to fly.

It was in my days at college that I used to do this, I was part of the CCF (combined cadet force) in the RAF section. One of the “perks” was getting the chance to go flying in a small 2 seater single engined plane with an RAF pilot. I loved these days, not only because I got to miss class but because I found a genuine love of flying. I was taught to do everything from takeoff to landing and aerobatics (loop the loops at 7000ft are jolly good fun).

Seeing that plane flying above me in the glorious sunshine made me realise just how much I missed it. I had looked into getting a private pilots license and ended up dismissing it as not financially viable. Maybe i’ll have to revisit that thought.

OOh a NEW Blogjet!

25 Jan

BlogJet today announced version 2 of there ever popular blogging tool for windows! I have used this for a few months now and believe me it is excellent! The new version is even better and has had a total revamp in the GUI! With Flickr and YouTube integration it’s so easy to add videos and photos!

Go Check it out!

On another note, I am off to Hull later so I doubt I will be blogging from there as it is a birthday party and we are going to some club! I’m back at some point tomorrow though so I will make sure I post then and add some photos for you to see!

Also in the news today is the imminent strike of BA’s workforce:

Cabin crew have complained that a new regime on sickness pay, introduced 18 months ago, means they are forced to work when they are ill.

BA insists it is merely cutting high levels of sickness absence. It says it has already cut the average of 22 days sickness absence per worker to 12, but this is still above the UK average of seven.

Another issue is starter pay rates for crew members, which begin at £10,000, in addition to general pay levels and promotion opportunities.

Now I can understand their dispute, on pay 10k starting salary is pretty pathetic, but the sick days issue, 12 days should be plenty, cripes 22 days average is just nuts. If they are sick for some major reason and need more than that in a year then have an extenuating cirmcumstances process. If they just have a cold then they should take a day and spend that day shaking it and be back to work! That’s my view – you can’t bring the worlds largest airline to a hault over this, the Unions and BA need to reslove this ASAP and avoid a major cockup!

Right I need some lunch now. Happy Thursday to you all!

P.s. Please all feel sorry for Dave who order a spinky new graphics card only to get this e-mail today

Hi Unfortunately we had a problem with out systems here, and this item is not available. Apologies for that. We are expecting stock in the next two weeks or so. Do you want to wait for stock to arrive or do you want to backorder. Cheers Byron

Now he’s off to another company who will hopefully take his money in exchange for technical goods!!

The American Presidency Race

23 Jan

WhitehouseSo one of my interests in life is the American governmental system, whether it is from watching too much “West Wing” and “Commander in Chief” or just a natural interest I am not sure, but I always find it interesting watching the story of the elections unfold!

One thing that has been highlighted this year is how technology will play a big part in the election campaigns. Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards has so far been the most pro active with the technology front. He invited a selection of famous bloggers to his announcement event and had Scobleizer following him around in the lead up to the announcement. He also has a Fantastic blog, he’s facebooked, myspaced, flickredyoutubed and has podcasts. He also has a great vision for the future of America.

Other people have announced their candidacy or formed official committees to test the water, and whilst most of these people have blogs etc not many have embraced the technology side as much as I think they should. With so many mediums now available to advertise on Technology needs to be taken seriously in matters of national importance.

I know I’ll be following with interest.

Crumbs what a weekend

21 Jan

Well what a weekend I’ve had, I went to Derby on friday to fix a friends PC. God knows what she had done to it but it was bust. I then ended up staying with her and her parents for the evening and kipped in the spare bedroom. This meant I did not get a chance to do the work I have been planning to do all week. I then spent saturday afternoon rebuilding my desktop PC which decided to start playing silly buggers with me. So there I was up till midnight getting things re-setup and installed. Then this morning I was up early recovering the data from my friends hard drive which I had removed from her PC as it needed a total rebuild. I got that recovered and then headed back to Derby to put the drive back in and rebuild the pc. That brings me to the present. I am currently on a train just pulling into Chesterfield, it’s dark cold and wet outside and in 20 minutes I am going to have to walk through it to get home.
Oh goody
And I still need to do my work :(

UPDATE – It’s SNOWING HERE!!!!

Late I know but it's the CES Round-up

18 Jan

Ok yeah I know this is like 4 days late but hey it’s my blog and if I want to be late I will – HA I win!

“It’s amazing to see the progress over the course of the year, and truly the Digital Decade is happening. We see it everywhere we look. We see it in photography over 2 billion digital photos were taken this last year; 65 percent of homes are using digital cameras.

We see portable devices proliferating, a higher and higher part of the growing PC market. We see the connections, both through Wi-Fi and 3G getting to the point where you can get information wherever you want to go. And we’re just scratching the surface. More and more can be done because as this marketplace is extended, the number of startups, the R&D budgets of the established companies, all are investing in this global market to do better and better work.”

Bill Gates, Chairman, Microsoft Corporation @ CES 07

I think the quote above sums up the whole of CES this year, the technology on show was incredible, from Vista and 1TB hard disks to toilet roll holders with a docking station for your iPod, yet what was seen this year is only a small percentage of the things to come. “And we’re just scratching the surface” a quote I firmly believe is very much a fact!

Now I know I said I would list the top 5 products and the 5 worst products, but there is one small issue! As I did not go I did not see 1st hand what was there and of course no one reported on crap products that were on show! So I am dropping the 5 Worst Products of CES bit and concentrating on the top 5 – Here we go then, I will put it in reverse order:

5 – The Sharp Aquos 108” LCD HDTV   Adsfd2  351212289_e884c075c5_b

Rolling in at No.5 is this giant TV from Sharp. This monster screen was pretty sparse on the details, it is 1080p and 1080i and has Sharp’s Advanced Super View LCD Panel which is manufactured from 8th Generation glass substrates. No word on price but I’d expect a hefty tag to go with it! Now I don’t know about you but I think that’s once COOL television, just imagine Gears of War on that in HD! Now I just need a house with a wall big enough to accommodate it!

4 – Windows Home Server Hands-on-home-media-server7  Hands-on-home-media-server4

The Windows Home Server is the long awaited Windows Server 2003 R2-based server for consumers that dispenses with the complexities of most Windows Server versions and provides the core storage, sharing, and remote access functionality. This HP product is designed to be a box that does all the average consumer wants with the simplicity of making a cup of tea. It comes with no monitor and is completely managed via a client on another PC. You can share media files allocate a certain amount of space per user, you can even set it up to backup all the PC’s on the network automatically . This server is perfect for those who want a central location for all their media and files and an easy way to keep your PC’s backed up and safe but for the technology evangelists (you guys) you might find it somewhat limiting. One clever idea is the storage aggregation that occurs. There are no drive letters in WHS all the storage is put into a pool and thus there is one location for storing your data. Expandability is not a problem either, just pop in an additional drive and run the add drive tool and bingo the data pool increases! An excellent product and certainly one I will be looking to invest in, as will a lot of other people!

3 –  Toshiba’s Portégé R400   Toshiba_portege_400_01

What a piece of kit this is! Toshiba showed of this new tablet/notebook device and tagged it with a Jan 30th release date. This notebook is simply brilliant, have it in notebook mode and you have a full keyboard functionality and yet with a simple twist of the screen it becomes a very sleek and stylish tablet PC. With a Intel Core Duo processor 1.2Ghz and 1GB of Ram (4GB max), as well as an 80GB 4200rpm hard disk this is almost minimum spec for the Windows Vista Business that is running on it. Early reports say it runs well but I will be interested to see once there are some more of the resource hugging apps installed how it performs Also the notebook has the all new Microsoft Active Notifications.

“Introducing the world’s first notebook PC with Microsoft® Active Notifications. Whether the computer is on or in suspend mode, Active Notifications can automatically receive or retrieve email and calendar items so they’re ready and waiting when you need them, visible on the Toshiba Edge Display.

To me that sounds great, but surely doing that means it’s using more battery in suspend mode that say a normal notebook, only time will tell! With a £1,319 ($2,599) price tag I think we’ll have have to see if Toshiba are on to a winner with this one! I like it though!

TEA BREAK!! GO GET A NICE CUP OF TEA AND SETTLE IN FOR THE TOP TWO FROM CES07

2 – LG Hybrid HD-DVD/BLU Ray player SuperMultiBlueBH100_270  IMG_2708_270

Coming in at No.2 is this little doozey from LG. Could this be the device that ends the format wars? Will this make turn one format into a betamax and the other VHS? Who knows but it’s bound to make an impact. CNET said:

“In case there was any doubt of the unit’s capability, the company’s press event included a demo of one player showing a custom demo loop labelled with a Blu-ray watermark and a second player showing the same loop with an HD DVD watermark. The company’s reps even bravely performed a live demo of playing first an HD DVD disc and then a Blu-ray disc, skipping chapters, and so on. At one point in the conference, the LG representative changed discs, which took about a minute, although the spokesperson claimed a short, 25-second load time.”

The device is 1080p capable and puts out 24–30 fps using HDMI and even has an ethernet port on the back (firmware updates possibly). One draw back though is that the device lacks the ability to access the HDi interactive layer found on some HD DVD discs and as a result some of the advanced interactive features of the discs will not be available! At $1,199 this might be out of reach for the standard consumer but it does pave the way for other firms to market their own devices and thus end this stupid format war!

1 – OQO Model 2 UMPC Oqo_model02_upright  Oqo_model02_thumbs_menu  Oqodocking

This for me was by far the best announcement at CES 07! OQO have gone away and basically improved everything in this revision of their UMPC that was one of the most popular of all UMPC’s available. Boasting a 1.5GHz VIA processor, 60GB hard drive, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 5-inch, 800×480 pixel display (with active digitizer for pen-based input), Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11a/b/g WiFi and an HDMI out port this pocket device is certainly on the more powerful side, sadly though this means that unless you pay the extra $300 for the extended battery you will only get 3 hours juice from it! It has a clever docking system though which gives you USB, mouse and keyboard ports, display, ethernet and a DVD±RW/RAM dual layer optical drive. Sadly though to get the device, the extended battery and the docking station (both of which you will need) it will set you back a hefty $2,249! Now that is a lot of cash and not one I see the features of the device justifying, sadly for me though I just love it and when it comes to the time where I need a new laptop (which could be quite soon) I might find myself forking out for one of these! I love it and love the whole UMPC concept. That is why the OQO V2 UMPC has come top of my CES 07 top 5 products list!

Wow LOOOOONG post, I won’t jabber on anymore, if you reached the end of this Well Done, give yourself a big hug!

The New iPhone

I spotted a commercial for it!

Back in Sheffield…

14 Jan

So I am back. The Sunny but very cold city of Sheffield is once my home again. I am currently at Daves house enjoying some of the delights of Pro Evo (even if I am a Fifa Man). Last night I ordered a Curry with Dave and Claire and watched MOTD whist eating that with them which was fun!

Dave’s just scored his 5th goal against Al who has scored 0

I am working on the Top CES products list as well but due to the agenda for today I am not sure it will surface until tomorrow some time! We are going to the pub quiz tonight as well, so anyone who wants to come to the graduate with a team of very clever people to try and beat us, feel free! Start time is 8pm! #

Right it’s nearly my turn on the PS2 so I must go!
