A Party, A video camera and me

21 Dec

I’m off to a party tonight! It was somewhat impromptu as well, but they are often more fun. No I am not taking my video camera, but I have been playing with it today. I have a project due in next semester and I need to take video with it so I have attached my video camera to my laptop and now can take digital video straight to my pc!

In other news, being back in Suffolk turns out not to be quite as nice as I had hoped. I live, how do I put this…. in the middle of nowhere and not owning a car means that when my parents are out I am stuck, barring getting on my bike and cycling to where I want to go! Now with the weather as it is (the thermostat did not go above -0.3) I am not cycling anywhere. So I am stuck here in Suffolk with not a lot to do (ok there is uni work). Ho hum it’ll soon be Christmas.

Also, in the world of space travel, the Shuttle mission is due to land tomorrow at 3:56pm EST tune into NASA TV from 2pm EST (about 6pm GMT I think) for all the coverage!

Lastly for today, I am going to a Party on new years at an undisclosed location and I am wondering if anyone wanted to come. There is room for a few extras and as the saying goes, “the more the merrier”. Let me know (andrew@aspiringgeek.me.uk)

Right going to get dinner and a shower now.

I’ll report on the party tomorrow at some point!

P.S. Sorry for not posting recently I’ve been busy (honestly)

Christmas + Shopping = Arguments

18 Dec

Hello all,
Today we left grans to go home, and we (I say we, really it was Dad) decided to go to Bluewater shopping mall. We left about 10am and after 2 HOURS yes 2 we got to Bluewater. It should really take no more that 45 mins to get there but the traffic was true hell. They are digging up the main road to and from Bluewater and it is creating chaos for miles and miles, in fact as I write this I am in the back of the car in the queue leaving Bluewater. Anyway, we did our shopping and of course as most shopping ventures do we ended up arguing about the most stupid things possible. Christmas and Shopping seems to spur so many arguments, wherever I went people seemed to be arguing about what they wanted, which jumper was a better colour, or what dvd player was best. Christmas is supposed to be a time for celebrating, relaxing and enjoying your families company, but the shops seem to just entice arguments. That is why internet shopping is soo much easier. No one to argue with, plenty of customer reviews and all price options you want. Also the prices are usually cheaper on the internet. All you have to do is choose what you want and pay for it, exactly the same as the shops just all from the comfort of your living room (or wherever your PC is located). Barring two things this year (because I left it too late) I got all of my presents on the internet and delivered. I had no reason to battle through the arguing families or spend hours looking for some obscure CD that I had never hear of in HMV.

We are in the Dartford tunnel now and TOMTOM| is throwing a hissy fit because it has no signal and we are under a rolling road block though the tunnel as there is congestion on the other side.

Right I am going to read some e-mails now (I got 105 over the weekend).

Musings from a Geek in Londinium

15 Dec

Good evening,

I arrived in London ok, the rest of the train journey was fine, but the tubes were fairly rotten. It should have taken about 40 mins to get from St Pancras to Morden but it took about 1hr 10 mins and then I had to wait flippin ages for a bus. Never mind though I got to my destination, and boy was it a relief. Somehow hills always seem steeper and longer when you have a large load of bags .  I can’t really report on anything too technical at the mo as I don’t have a proper internet connection and if I surf on my phone it’ll cost a fortune. What I can say is that Nintendo, makers of the both famous and infamous Wii console have said they will replace all broken wrist straps with the new thicker safer wrist straps. Also in a special event arranged by Bill Gates, the influential bloggers of the blogosphere met with the worlds richest man at Microsoft hq in Seattle. At this event among other things Mr Gates commented that music copy protection is too confusing for most people. For the full articles go to the BBC site and to the technology section.

Sorry the links are to the articles directly are not there.

Tomorrow we are supposed to be going to get Gran a new TV, which she is adamant on paying for. Little does she know that in about 2 hours the new TV she wants will be en route with my Mother and Father and of course she won’t be paying a penny! Happy Christmas Gran!

Right I’m off now

On a train and Mount E-mail Conquered

14 Dec

Hello all, Geek on a train here. I am en route to Londinium at the moment.

The first thing I did after getting on was battle with mount E-mail. I know, I said I was going to do that last week but …… I didn’t and now that I have climbed the mountain and jumped up and down on it till it’s compacted into a small mole hill I feel much better! I took my mailbox from 700 (it grew) down to 50 odd that can be read later! Replies have been written and will be sent when I post this blog!

Today has been a long one. I am lugging around a massive rucksack and a huge bag, both of which are exceedingly heavy. So if you see a smartly dressed bloke walking through London looking like he’s going on a trek through the Amazon rainforest, that’ll be me! Anyway I have to get across London with these bags and then on a bus and then up a hill, all in all I will be very glad when I finally sit down for the evening.

Ok I am going to get on with some work now.

p.s. Trains are great I have a pretty lady in front of me and 2 to the side of me!

Blogging Phenomonon set to peak????

14 Dec

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6178611.stm

A report released today says that:

Analysts said that during the middle of next year the number of blogs will level out at about 100 million.

This I don’t think I agree with, yes it might have a lull and yes according to the report, 200 million people have stopped writing blogs but I believe that blogging is only going to get bigger. As the younger generations grow up and today’s toddlers become grunting, moaning teenagers, their lives are filled with technology. With WiFi commonly available now and laptops / desktops getting cheaper buy the day the ease of blogging is becoming more and more apparent. If you ask me, blogging is a force that is only on the increase. You can already blog from your phone/ PDA and when else do you get to put your views forward to a international audience?

Of course the more blogs there are the harder it will be to write a “Good blog” and to keep a regular audience reading your blog. So to do just that people are going to need to learn how to write in an engaging and entertaining way. Surely then you could say that blogging could lead to an increase in literacy skills amongst the younger generation – maybe the government should drive for everyone to blog? I’ll leave that suggestion just hanging there – let me know what you think!

Treo 750V as a modem?….. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy

13 Dec

Ok firstly I cannot believe I just said easy peasy lemon squeezy, I just said it again….. Oh dear.

Now the reason for the post:Palm_logo

I wanted to try to get my new Treo 750v to act as a modem so I can blog when I have no Wifi hotspot or broadband. Well I knew there was a modem link feature in the phone so I put it in “modem” mode and connected it to my laptop. Of course I got windows saying “HEY, I need some drivers” and could I find the drivers? Could I heck. Of course being a geek who thinks he knows everything I did not want to submit to using the technical support on palms website, but after 25 futile mins I had to go over there and see if there were some drivers available. Now it took me a while to find them, but that is more to do with the Palm website and it’s poor design. Once I had found them (they came with an easy guide to installing and configuring the phone) it took no more than 3 mins to have my phone working as a modem and my laptop connected to the internet at speeds of upto 512kbps!! Litterally, it was so easy even my mother could have done it!

It worked perfectly 1st time and now I can be almost anywhere and have an internet connection! Ok it’s only 512kbs (which actually is as fast as my parents internet at home – They need to upgrade) and no I am not going to be playing CS over it or downloading ScobleShow vids etc but it’s enough to download my e-mails and blog to you guys so I am happy!

Yet another reason for you guys to get the awsome Treo 750v

Bye for now

A

UPDATE – I have decided it was not the Palm website that was the reason for it taking a while to find the drivers, it was infact my geekishness that slowed it down. I was looking directly under the Software and Downloads section not the support forums, if I had gone there directly I would have got them in about 1 min – DOH

Mid Week Review

13 Dec

Ok the Google thing I might have blown up a bit too much, seems that the techie world are just finding this “funny” more than anything, The appropriate people have apologised and the word from Google employees is that the person guilty of this Fau Par is getting a lot of ribbing for it! Oh well, no big issues for googles PR department!

Many people have dissagreed with the whole I look like Russell Crowe thing so I guess that’s that dream over, never mind.

The Space mission is going well. The intergalatic electricians are up there and have completed thier first spacewalk. Keep it going guys.

Also I am off home for xmas tomorrow, well home via London for a few days! So between tomorrow and Monday I am most likely not going to be on the net! Where I am in London has not broadband (I know how 18th Century) so I won’t really be checking my mail or able to do much posting! If I can get my lappy working via my mobile I might be ok though, we’ll see. Feel free to txt or call me if you need to get in touch!

A Childhood is a Precious thing

12 Dec

Meet_snoopy_bigI stumbled across the Snoopy website today, Snoopy for me was a big part of my childhood and I loved reading the comics and no matter how many times I read a strip it was still funny. It made me think about all the things from my childhood, I can remember so many afternoons sitting there reading the comic strips etc, it made me think how quickly everything moves on. It seems like only yesterday I would get home from school or whatever and I’d be sitting there reading snoopy in dads paper, or just generally doing kid things. Now I get home from wherever and I park myself in front of this silly box, and press these black keys for hours on end. Your childhood is so different, you didn’t have worries, you didn’t have pressure (well not pressure as an adult feels pressure). Life was spontaneous, you could drop whatever you were doing when you wanted and jump onto something completely different. You didn’t have responsibilities or anyone really counting on you. You were free! Now, reading this makes you think doesn’t it, now we have jobs and meaningful roles in society, we have to do things we are expected to do things. Now don’t get me wrong I like being an adult and I love my life (being a geek is really great) but sometimes I just wish I could go back to my childhood, just for a few hours and leave all the pressures of the real world behind. Should any kids be reading this I say this to you, “Don’t grow up too fast, once your childhood is over that’s it it doesn’t come back ENJOY it!!!!” and what they say about your school days being the best of your lives – there’s something to be said for that!

Yeah I know I’m Mr deep and meaningful tonight oh well, don’t worry normal service will be resumed tomorrow!

Google – copy cats of the tech world

12 Dec

Look’s like someone at google has made a little booboo, infact I think it was a HUGE fau par. The Scobleizer blog was the blog that brought this to my attention.

Look at this Photo

Y-ie7-sm

Now look at this

G-ie7-sm

Yep, some goofus at Google has copied the Yahoo site promoting IE7 and “googlefied” it!

Google have a brilliant reputation for wanting to make their users’ life easier and better and this could be a big problem for them. They now are going to be scrutinised on all their pages etc etc.. and while I don’t think there are anymore instances of pages being copied, it will put a big blot on Googles copybook. The solutions that Scoble suggests for Google apologising should be, and need to be acted upon swiftly. At the moment this incident is somewhat confined to the techie world and the techie people but should it flow into the mainstream news Googles PR department are going to have an early xmas present courtesy of a “lazy/inexperience/stupid” designer.

I’ll be interested to see what the Google shares do when the NYSE opens this morning!

Rant over
