Take me Drunk, I'm home

30 Nov

— No, I’ve not lost the plot and no I am not P***ed, I saw the title of this entry on a sticker on the side of a wheelchair today and it made me laugh – that’s all. —

Evening all I am much less fragile now (thanks to a subway sandwich and a coke ) and so I thought I’d tell you about my day!

Firstly I managed to make it though today and get my assignment handed in so that was a good point, I also did a bit of window shopping with Lorrae (well she bought things and I looked) so I have a few ideas for xmas presents! I did though get home this afternoon and discover I had post! Now post can be and usually is, quite fun, unless it’s a bill then it sux! Well this post was pants, It was from the student loans company, it was one of their friendly reminders just saying “Hi, hope your well, you now owe us a whopping £8,552.00, Have a good day” They send them round once a year or so just to remind you that once you complete your degree and get a job a percentage of ur salary will be sucked away before you ever see it and this will go on for 80 million years or until you die, which ever comes first! Ok maybe not that long, but doing some maths I reckon it’s gonna take roughly 15 years to pay that of for most people (ok ok it’s job and salary dependent, but I am just averaging). Oh well only another 1.5 years to go and a cool 6.5k more to add to that yum!

Other than that my day has been ok! DHL are useless but that is a totally different story and not one I have the energy to post here now!

Ho hum I am off for a cup of tea now!

Bye for now

Poker Night

30 Nov

Morning all!

My current state is one of fragileness as I paid a visit to the usual drinking hole last night!          Poker Nights are coming

We also ended up the night with the idea of setting up a poker night! We are looking to get the first one going next week! Max 10 players (unless someone supplies more chips) and buy in is some form of alcohol that can be consumed by everyone! (beer, spirits, wine (for the ladies) etc). The first week or so will be fun only and no money involved but hey who knows if we make it a regular thing then we might involve some 20p’s :) !!

We are looking to make this a bi-weekly thing hopefully so there are plenty of opportunities! If anyone wants to join e-mail me andrew@aspiringgeek.me.uk, all requests based on a first come first served basis, we have 6 at the moment so room for 4 more, unless someone brings more chips (300 will cover another 10 people) Ben feel free to bring your’s if your joining us!

27 Nov

Morning all,

I’m sitting on the tube again now heading to Kings Cross to get my train back to Sheffield. As I was walking from the bus stop to the tube station I went past a butchers who as well as selling the usual meat you’d expect sold and…… ”ornamental bongs” yip bongs in a butchers  now I’ve heard of diversification but that just takes the pee. Ho hum. I’d also like to thank Robert Scoble of Scobleizer and ScobleShow fame for taking the time to answer my e-mail. He’s in the UK at the moment. If you are near Sheffield Robert send me a mail. I’ll gladly take you for a drink. Right I’m off now, I’m gonna read my book for a while.

UPDATE: don’t you just hate defective trains? The tube train in front of ours broke down and we got stuck at Clapham north for 15 mins. This now means I have 35 mins to get across london and onto my train. Oh joy of joys. I’m 6 stops away (which should be 12 mins) but judging by my luck it’ll take 30 And then i’ll have 5 mins to run to the platform which at a walk usually takes 10 mins. All this with a rucksac. Anyone feeling sorry for me yet? Damn tubes.

Bye.

Why I love Google Reader

27 Nov

I am sitting here in London on a Sunday afternoon having had an enormous roast dinner and feeling very full. I was reading my book until I thought it would be a great chance to catch up on my feed reading. I use google reader to manage my feeds, I have used it for about 3 months now and I have to say it’s the best thing I’ve seen in a while. I used to use a PC based reader which meant I had to be at my desktop or have my laptop with me to see my feeds. This can be and is quite inconvenient some times.

I heard about google reader through one of my feeds “Scobleizer” and since testing it out I have never gone back. It allows me to log in anywhere and read my feeds. I can be at university or in an internet café, or at a mates house it doesn’t matter where I am at all. I can do all sorts with it, I can read items and then if I want to follow them up I can “star” them and come back to them later in the “starred” section. I can also put particular posts in a public “link blog” though I don’t do this at the moment i am going to start I think. I can also access this wonderful thing from my mobile which, is what I am doing now. I put my book down and loaded pocket IE and there it was google reader in all it’s mobile glory. I can read, star, and view all my subscriptions and keep an eye on all the things that interest me. I really thing you should all go and check out google reader. www.google.com/reader And start using it. Go on you know you want to.

Right back to the book

There is a great interview with the head engineer of google reader on how it works here

The Classical spectacular

27 Nov

These posts were written on the weekend I am just uploading them now as I am back at my PC

Hello everyone,Albert Hall

I am currently sitting in the Royal Albert Hall at the intermission of the show. It’s certainly been an incredible 1st half. The music has been a varied and fun selection. It started with the piece of music featured in Stanley Kubricks 2001 a space oddisy (Richard Struass’s “Also Sprach Zarathustra”. Then there was Wagners “ride of the valkyries” followed by some Verdi, Fucik, Pachelbel (Canon (which I love)), as well as Bizet, Puccini (there was a very attractive singer for that peice) some more Verdi and ending with Ravel’s Bolero and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No1. Of course we were all singing along and waving our flags to the last one! We are sitting in the stalls right at the front and the view is amazing. We are also next to the technical box where the lighting and technical directors sit and run the laser and light show. Being able to watch them is a real insight into how all the workings of it come together. Right time for the second half, I’ll report back later, on how it is.

Well I’m on the tube now heading home after a spectacular, fantastic and amazing second half to the performance. They started with the theme from “the great escape” and went through what I thought we’re pieces I didn’t know but turned out I recognized all of them (bar one) when I heard them. The lights got yet more fantastic and there was more solo’s from the attractive lady from the 1st half as well as a fantastic violinist. Of course it ended with the ever popular 1812 with cannons, flames, muskets and sparks and a couple of encores to “Rule Brittania”. As expected the balloons dropped down from the sky and everyone popped them. All in all as I had expected it was a fantastic night and immense fun was had by all. I highly recommend going to see this production if you can. It plays around Britain as well as Europe but certainy seems that bit more special to see it in the spectacular Albert Hall. We are nearly home now so I will end.

Hope you all had lovely weekends.

Talk soon everyone

I'm on a train

23 Nov

Well hello there everyone. I am currently sitting on a train en route to London. I am off there to see family and to see a concert at the Albert Hall. I am going to see Raymond Gubbay’s (forgive me if I spelt his name wrong) Classical Spectacular. I went last year and though classical music is not really my thing I had a really good time. So when someone offered to to take me I jumped at the chance. I am also going to get my hair cut tomorrow. Dave suggested I do something different with my hair but I don’t know what to do. If you have any sensible ideas please feel free to txt me.

I’m glad I can blog to you from my phone as I really had no want to carry a heavy laptop round with me this weekend.

Right gonna get on with my book now.
Bye for now

22 Nov

ChangeThose of you who are observant will have noticed that the site has changed! Those who have not (or are using RSS to read this post) should look a bit harder!

I am in the process of “fiddling” with a few things so please be patient with me while a few changes go on! I love to hear what people think of my site, so leave a comment or e-mail me @ andrew@aspiringgeek.me.uk

I just watched Man Utd lose to Celtic and Arsenal come back from 0–1 down to win 3–1, all in all an interesting night for football! Good matches though!

Hope you’re all well! I am still de-hydrated even though I have drunk many cups of tea!

Oh I’ve just noticed that it’s 12:05  I think it’s time to go to bed! I was so engrossed in this rebuild I lost all track of time!
