FriendFeed gets inhaled by Facebook…. who wins?

11 Aug

So for me this was not a huge shock (someone was going to buy them sooner or later) but a possible detremental decision for the users of FriendFeed. For Facebook this is a big move and a good one to boot, they have identified the power of realtime search and bought the best company in that particular area. There is nothing close to FriendFeed’s tech for realtime updating or search at the moment. Facebook will definately be able to capitalise on this.

The larger issue that bugs me is what will happen to Friendfeed, in the short term the CEO’s of both companies say that nothing major will change, but that they are working on a roadmap for the future of both services. Paul Buchheit (co founder of FriendFeed) told Robert Scoble in an interview that he and Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, “are on the same wavelength”.

In essence Friendfeed is dead, the dev team will be much more effective on getting realtime search to work for the 300 million users Facebook has, the faster thay do that the better. It may happen a few years down the line from now but in reality Friendfeed will be assimilated like a new borg entity into the collective that is Facebook (sorry that was uber geeky).

Almalgamating the FriendFeed users into Facebook is a big issue that the team will need to overcome. I use FriendFeed for news and info, Facebook is for me about keeping in touch with contacts and friends. I like these two things being seperate and cannot see a seemless way to link them together.

To be honest Facebook gets and epic win on this deal, the guys at FriendFeed do too (they get jobs with Facebook and a load of cash) but the users of FriendFeed lose out big time.

LG U990 (Viewty) Mini-Review

28 Mar

This post is from Tom Inett, it’s a bit long so I have put a half time break in it, if you put the kettle on to boil now by the time you hit the break it will be ready to make the tea!

Hi all! Ok, so my good friend Andy has asked me to give my thoughts on my LG Viewty handset I have been using for the past 3 and half months and so I have graciously obliged with the following mini-review (or Mini-view if you will!)

Up until last November I had been using various older handsets on PAYG tariffs (due to my poor student finances!), but I had grown restless of being behind the times, had just sampled the delights of my friends iPhone and wanted to get myself a new bit of technology to play with!

I make no secret of my love of the iPhones interface, I believe it to be probably the most user friendly device ever created, however I was frustrated by the iPhones relative lack of features with comparison the other leading phones at the time, primarily it’s lack of decent camera and shoddy internet performance (also the massive contract price demanded in the UK as well as £200 handset fee put it out of my price range completely!!) Therefore I narrowed my search to 2 of the other leading handsets at the time, the Nokia N95 and the Sony Eriksson K850i.

As a rule, I don’t like Nokia phones, not because they aren’t good, but just because they used to have such a monopoly over the handset market and I’m a bit of a techno snob when it comes to being different to everyone else!! I also was slightly annoyed by the apparent poor optimisation of the GPS device inside it – if a phone has cool features like that, it’s best that they work!! I also had a friend who had just got hold of the K850i, and despite being happy with it for the first couple of days, started experiencing faults with it after that (and still to this day!) which put me off that then.

Solution? The LG Viewty. Similar features to the iPhone (i.e. almost fully touch screen interface/looks/music etc.), but with a 5MP camera and HSDPA (2 generations better than the iPhone could manage!!). So…what’s it like? Well…Good. Very good. Sure it has some flaws, but what phone doesn’t nowadays…but for day to day use I don’t think I could find a much better handset for me. The menu system is slightly confusing, however the firmware I have on mine, customised by 3 (my network) contains 3 shortcut buttons on the main screen which take care of almost everything you want out of the phone..(Facebook in 2 touches? Yes please!!)

Ok so to stop myself rambling, I’m going to come up with my top 3 Pro’s/Con’s…

Call of Duty rocks

15 Jul

I’m not a big gamer really, if I am playing a game though, it’s usually either, a driving sim, a flying sim or one of the Fifa games (let’s not get into the PES vs FIFA debate now), oh and of course I cannot get enough of Tomb Raider. On the odd occasion I might play Half Life, Counter Strike or another RPG, but have never been that good at them and they are not a genre I’d like to play constantly. Until that is, I played Call of Duty. Lots of my friends and other people (Chris Moyles of Radio One fame for example) had been talking about it and so I thought I’d give it a try. Well yesterday I completed Call of Duty 1 (it took me about a 3 weeks of on and off gaming) and BOY OH BOY what a fantastic game!! It drew me in and I found myself playing it for hours and hours and getting more and more angry and frustrated as I kept getting shot by the Nazis. The graphics are fantastic even on Vista and the game runs amazingly well! I just bought CoD2 last night and have been playing that today, and it’s even better than its predecessor. Better graphics, better AI, better gameplay, all round a fantastic experience!!

I would recommend it to anyone!

Twitter??? Not for me

19 Mar

Twitter, who has heard of it? I know most of America has but over here in the UK I am interested to see what the take up is! I 1st found twitter courtesy of Scoble and decided to sign up and see what the hype is all about.

I am not impressed with Twitter, when suggesting it to my friends they said “that’s stupid” or “what’s the point we’ve got MSN”. Now I am one for being contactable most if not all of the time, I am on MSN(WL), Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, Skype and of course that ancient technology e-mail! Twitter though has not grabbed me, if I want people to know what I am doing I use MSN and add it to my name for example, my name could be “Andy – Going to the pub tonight, feel free to come along” and when my friends or social circle log on to MSN they will see my name and that’s that.

My online life is far too busy at the moment be it, feed reading, keeping in touch with my friends and colleuges via IM and not to mention the blogging and everything else I do on here! Twitter is just one of those time consuming extras that is sooo unnecessary, who the hell wants to know what I am doing every second of the day?? Why have a conversation on twitter when you could IM or e-mail? Ok ok you can interact with people you don’t have on your IM list (and probably wouldn’t want to add to your list), but to be honest if you are talking to complete strangers on twitter you obviously have too much time on your hands!

Oh and as for the mobile feature Chris Pirillo points out the exact problem. I can’t afford to get £1,000 phone bills because I spent my days texting twitter to let people know I am waiting in a queue to buy my lunch!!!!

Twitter is not for me and I don’t see my view changing anytime soon!

Therefore I am officially “Twitterpissed” and everyone needs to stop talking about it!

A lovely but LONG lunch

05 Mar

Today I went out for lunch. It was a very nice lunch with my friend Lorrae. The food was lovely and the waiting staff were friendly. The price was acceptable and the atmosphere was (albeit a bit busy) pleasant. What I want to know is: WHY DID IT TAKE 35 ******* MINS FOR OUR MAIN COURSE TO ARRIVE AND THEN 45 MINS FOR THE PUDDING????? Not a word of apology from anyone either!

For the main course I had steak (rare) and Lorrae had fish and chips, ok, it was busy (ish) and so we were not too fussed at the time it took to get the main course as the food was definitely worth the wait! The pudding though, a slice of apple pie (pre cooked) and custard (from a carton) and a chocolate fudge cake (just needing to be put on a plate) should not take 45 minutes to arrive! Again not a word from our waitress at all! So we finished up and left. Usually the particular restaurant is very good just today seemed to let the standards slip a little! So in the words of Peter Griffin “That really grinds my gears”.

Ok rant over,

Game On

28 Feb

So on Sunday I went to the “Game On” exhibition at the London Science Museum. The Exhibition was about the history of computer games and games consoles. It was a really interesting day and seeing all the different consoles and games was an interesting flashback from my past. They had Jeff Crammonds Grand Prix on show and available to play and I can still remember buying this game, inserting the floppy discs into my external floppy drive on my 1st Laptop (Toshiba Portege 4700 a 486 system), running the game and thinking WOW how cool is this! It still had the same “fun factor” I remembered but seeing the graphics again just makes you realise how much things have advanced in just 12 years!

Also seeing the PDP-1 which was the 1st computer to run a game was really neat, that thing is as big as my bedroom, seriously! There was a whole segment devoted to what has to be one of my all time favourite games – Tomb Raider, they had TR1 available to play as well as posters and concept art from the original game and the Bafta that was awarded to Core Design in 1999.

There was a section on the evolution of hand held gaming devices as well which was interesting to see, from the old grey Game Boys to the Game Gear and now the PSP, it had them all. I took a video of all of them which will be posted below.

The last thing we did at the exhibition was play on the new F1 Championship game on the PS3! It was amazing to see the graphics quality of the game and showed the amazing contrast from the Orginal Jeff Crammond Grand Prix game. I took a video of Tom racing a 3 lap race around Albert Park, Melbourne which I will also Post below!

The evening after the exhibition was good also, with Tom, Kiwi and myself going to the pub for some drinks and dinner and later being met buy one of Tom and Kiwi’s friends Harriet, she was a lovely person and it was really good to meet her!

The Photos from the day are here

PC Power consumption

17 Feb

Ever thought about how much power your PC uses?

Jeff Atwood at Coding Horror has an interesting post on it here!

I now need to find a device that measures my PC’s watt usage, anyone know where I can get one?

p.s. I went to play football today, the field was very very muddy, I got very very muddy, GREAT FUN INDEED. Honestly put some old clothes on and go play football on a wet really muddy field/park, it’s brilliant!

Today, I got a Friend back

30 Jan

Today, a friend I hold in very high regard started taking to me again after I was a complete k**b to her.

I just wanted to say this so everyone can see it! I am really truly sorry for what I did, I have learn’t my lesson and from that I have become a better person!

Sam, I am really really pleased we are talking again!

Don’t take your friends for granted, because that one time you do, it’ll all back fire and you’ll lose them!

I hope you all have a very happy and friendly day

OOh a NEW Blogjet!

25 Jan

BlogJet today announced version 2 of there ever popular blogging tool for windows! I have used this for a few months now and believe me it is excellent! The new version is even better and has had a total revamp in the GUI! With Flickr and YouTube integration it’s so easy to add videos and photos!

Go Check it out!

On another note, I am off to Hull later so I doubt I will be blogging from there as it is a birthday party and we are going to some club! I’m back at some point tomorrow though so I will make sure I post then and add some photos for you to see!

Also in the news today is the imminent strike of BA’s workforce:

Cabin crew have complained that a new regime on sickness pay, introduced 18 months ago, means they are forced to work when they are ill.

BA insists it is merely cutting high levels of sickness absence. It says it has already cut the average of 22 days sickness absence per worker to 12, but this is still above the UK average of seven.

Another issue is starter pay rates for crew members, which begin at £10,000, in addition to general pay levels and promotion opportunities.

Now I can understand their dispute, on pay 10k starting salary is pretty pathetic, but the sick days issue, 12 days should be plenty, cripes 22 days average is just nuts. If they are sick for some major reason and need more than that in a year then have an extenuating cirmcumstances process. If they just have a cold then they should take a day and spend that day shaking it and be back to work! That’s my view – you can’t bring the worlds largest airline to a hault over this, the Unions and BA need to reslove this ASAP and avoid a major cockup!

Right I need some lunch now. Happy Thursday to you all!

P.s. Please all feel sorry for Dave who order a spinky new graphics card only to get this e-mail today

Hi Unfortunately we had a problem with out systems here, and this item is not available. Apologies for that. We are expecting stock in the next two weeks or so. Do you want to wait for stock to arrive or do you want to backorder. Cheers Byron

Now he’s off to another company who will hopefully take his money in exchange for technical goods!!

A Party, A video camera and me

21 Dec

I’m off to a party tonight! It was somewhat impromptu as well, but they are often more fun. No I am not taking my video camera, but I have been playing with it today. I have a project due in next semester and I need to take video with it so I have attached my video camera to my laptop and now can take digital video straight to my pc!

In other news, being back in Suffolk turns out not to be quite as nice as I had hoped. I live, how do I put this…. in the middle of nowhere and not owning a car means that when my parents are out I am stuck, barring getting on my bike and cycling to where I want to go! Now with the weather as it is (the thermostat did not go above -0.3) I am not cycling anywhere. So I am stuck here in Suffolk with not a lot to do (ok there is uni work). Ho hum it’ll soon be Christmas.

Also, in the world of space travel, the Shuttle mission is due to land tomorrow at 3:56pm EST tune into NASA TV from 2pm EST (about 6pm GMT I think) for all the coverage!

Lastly for today, I am going to a Party on new years at an undisclosed location and I am wondering if anyone wanted to come. There is room for a few extras and as the saying goes, “the more the merrier”. Let me know (andrew@aspiringgeek.me.uk)

Right going to get dinner and a shower now.

I’ll report on the party tomorrow at some point!

P.S. Sorry for not posting recently I’ve been busy (honestly)
