Chrome gets themeified

05 Aug

So this has been rumoured for the last few days after the latest development release of Chrome offered theme support, however as of today the theme directory has gone live.

Some of the themes I must admit are not my cup of tea, that said I do like a lot of them and to have the ability to theme things is certainly an added bonus for what is already a super browser.

The iGoogle themes took off pretty well and some amazing designs have come from people for that, I assume we can expect much of the same for Chrome themes.

All we now need is plugins and extensions to be added….

Google gives a voice to the world….. well the US

14 Mar

Google voice a new service from the search giant, was launched in the US as a preview release on the 11th of this month. The service will be available to all current Grand Central users to test and utilise, with a roll out to new users in the not too distant future. Google bought Grand Central in July 07 and has used the technology to create Google Voice.

The service will allow users to have one telephone number that will in turn when rung send the call to all devices linked to the users Google Voice account be it a cell phone, a home phone or a work phone. Also the application can write transcripts of voicemails and allows you to search SMS’s you send. Also it allows you to have a central voicemail repository that can be accessed from the web or by phone, as well as call screening.

This will initially only be available in the US but Google expects to roll it out internationally soon. Oh and the best thing about it?…. it’s free something that is going to really spook standard telecoms operators!

UPDATE: The original posting of that was not a polished as it should have been, for that I apologise. I was rushing to get to complete it and as a result did not check it properly.

It's raining in Googles cloud.

*This is a pre-written post and so is a little out of date*

Not more than two weeks after Google had a major downtime in it’s Gmail service which was then hit by a major phishing scam, it appears that yet more bad column inches has befell the company I like so much. The problem lies this time with the Google docs, more specifically the privacy of the documents within the system.

In a privacy error that underscores some of the biggest problems surrounding cloud-based services, Google has sent a notice to a number of users of its Document and Spreadsheets products stating that it may have inadvertently shared some of their documents with contacts who were never granted access to them.

This for me is one of the big issues with cloud computing, the security of the whole premise needs to be perfect, 110% solid all the time if businesses are going to use it for mainstream day-to-day processes. I believe the idea is technically very good and indeed will become the method for doing day to day things over the next few years but until issues like this are sorted I will certainly not be putting my info into any clouds.

What’s your view

Thanks goes to Dave for the title of this post, (he would have complained if I had not mentioned him). Also he has developed and released an app for the iPhone search for “iNeedaWee” in the app store and check it out!!!

The new look Google "social" Search

Watch this video!!!

Well it was only a matter of time before this sort of thing came into the light from the Google camp. Personally I think it rocks, it makes an already hugely powerful search service even better. Not sure about the commenting element so much but the rating side is certainly a welcome addition in my book. Now if only I could get in on the beta testing.

Anyone know how??

Woah where does the time go

20 Jun

It seems like only a few days ago I was blogging about my bad back and all the things I wanted to post over the following weekend and all of a sudden right out of nowhere it’s June the 20th and I’ve posted nothing for 20 days! That’s bad, work has been so demanding it seems to have absorbed most of my time and the time it hasn’t sucked away from me, has been spent either sleeping or resting as a result of being tired from all the work!

I am training at the moment to hopefully move into a vacant management role, there is a bit of competition from someone else so I’m having to work pretty hard to make sure I am the one they choose!

Anyway as a result my online life has been put a lil bit on the back burner. Google reader has 381 items for me to sift through, my emails are mostly junk at the moment so that’s fine and as you have probably noticed the blogging got left behind.

Right that’s enough explaining on with the news.

Looks like the Yahoo MSFT deal is totally off, the new 3G iPhone was released (snore). Yahoo partners with Google to allow Google ads on Yahoo search pages. Firefox 3 was officially released (yay). Nasa finds Ice evidence of ice on the surface of Mars! The WiMax Forum certifies it’s first 2.5GHz products. WiMax will be the future, and I want to discuss that much more but it deserves a post all to itself!

Other than what’s above there has not been much else major that has happened, not that I have noticed on my radar anyway! I did go and see a physio about my back yesterday though, apparently my posture is appalling, my spine bends in the wrong place and I don’t exercise enough! I think most of that I knew already, She’s given me exercises to do so we’ll see if they help.

Right, that’s enough for now!
